In summer the Dreamcatcher lift at Grand Targhee runs as a scenic chairlift, carrying you up the resort's flower-covered slopes toward the shoulder of Fred's Mountain with the full west face of the Tetons filling the sky. The resort sits on the wet Idaho side of the range, and its slopes are famous for extraordinary July and August wildflower displays — sheets of lupine, arrowleaf balsamroot, paintbrush, and mule's ears that draw photographers from across the region. From the top, easy graded paths and overlooks let you stroll among the blooms and take in the Grand, Middle, and South Tetons from an angle few Jackson visitors ever see. Bring a layer; the summit is breezy and cool even in midsummer.

Trap Bar & Grill, Grand Targhee Village

The Trap Bar & Grill in the base village at Grand Targhee is the mountain's beloved gathering spot, an unpretentious slopeside pub with a big sunny deck looking straight up at the peaks. Its famous 'Trap Nachos,' burgers, and cold local beer make it exactly the relaxed lunch a west-slope day is built around, and live music often fills the deck on summer weekends. Eat outside if the weather allows — the view of the Tetons rising above the village is the whole point. If you'd rather head down valley, the town of Driggs, twenty minutes away, has cafes and a well-regarded local pizzeria.

Teton Canyon Meadows

A short drive from the resort, the Teton Canyon road climbs to a trailhead where the west side of the range opens into broad, gentle meadows drained by the North and South Forks of Teton Creek. This is one of the quietest and most beautiful approaches to the high Tetons, and for a relaxed day you need only walk a mile or so up the near-level valley floor to stand among wildflower meadows with the great gray peaks looming directly ahead. Moose browse the willows along the creek, and the flat, grassy benches make ideal spots to linger before turning back. The canyon is cool and shaded in its lower reaches, an easy, tranquil close to the afternoon.
