Jamesport — Missouri's Largest Amish Community & the Green Hills Countryside
Ninety minutes northeast of Kansas City, the green rolling farmland of Daviess County holds Jamesport, the largest Old Order Amish settlement in Missouri, where black buggies still clop along gravel roads and the pace of life runs a full century behind the interstate. Day one wanders the town's cluster of Amish and Mennonite shops, bakeries, and craft stores — quilts, hand-built furniture, bulk foods, cheese, and fresh baked goods sold from farmhouse porches and simple storefronts. Day two heads out along the countryside 'buggy trail' of farm-stand stores scattered down the back roads, then into the historic courthouse town of Gallatin before the drive home. It is a slow, gentle weekend of handmade goods, home cooking, and open country. Note that most Amish businesses are closed on Sundays, so plan the shopping for a weekday or Saturday.
