Chattanooga — Aquarium, Art & the Riverfront Renaissance

The Tennessee Aquarium, opened in 1992, was the spark that ignited Chattanooga's entire riverfront revival, and it remains one of the finest aquariums in the country. Stone stairways and hidden overlooks connect the district to the riverwalk below, and the Walnut Street Bridge is an easy stroll away if you want to return to the water. Songbirds houses one of the most significant collections of rare and vintage guitars in the world, a treasury that has drawn comparisons to a Smithsonian of the instrument. On display are hundreds of guitars, including an unrivaled assembly of pre-World War II and 1950s-60s Fender and Gibson electrics — the 'holy grail' Les Pauls, Broadcasters, and Stratocasters whose surviving examples number in the mere handfuls. The Bessie Smith Cultural Center honors Chattanooga's own daughter, Bessie Smith — the 'Empress of the Blues,' born in the city in 1894 and the highest-paid Black entertainer of the 1920s, whose towering voice shaped the course of American music before her death in 1937. The center anchors the historic Martin Luther King Boulevard district, once the vibrant heart of Black Chattanooga known as 'the Big Nine,' a stretch that rivaled Beale Street for its music halls and nightlife. Exhibits trace African American history and achievement in the region alongside the story of Smith herself and the blues she helped define, and the adjoining performance hall keeps live music at the center of its mission. It is a moving and important counterweight to the city's better-known attractions, and a resonant final stop before the road home.
