Tellico Lake Country — Cherokee Ground, Quiet Water & the Cherohala Foothills

Southwest of Knoxville the Little Tennessee River spreads into Tellico Lake, a clear reservoir cradled by low green foothills that has become one of East Tennessee's most relaxed lake retreats. This two-day escape settles into that unhurried rhythm. Day one is spent on and beside the water — the marinas and open coves of Tellico Village, a pontoon or shoreline afternoon, and the small family wineries that dot the surrounding hills — with an overnight on the lake. Day two follows the land up into the Cherohala foothills toward Tellico Plains, the mountain-craft town at the mouth of the Cherohala Skyway, and out to Coker Creek, an old gold-panning settlement now known for its waterfalls and handmade crafts. It is deep Cherokee and Overhill country — Fort Loudoun and the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum sit right on the lake — but the mood throughout is slow water, back roads, and small towns.
