Petit Jean & Mount Nebo — The Arkansas River Valley's CCC Mountains
Two and a half hours west of Memphis the flat Delta finally breaks against the mountains of the Arkansas River Valley, where two flat-topped peaks rise straight out of the river plain. Petit Jean Mountain, Arkansas's first state park, is a masterpiece of 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps craftsmanship — hand-cut stone trails leading to the 95-foot Cedar Falls, the boulder-choked Grotto, and a rustic lodge on the rim. Mount Nebo, just across the river, is a smaller, wilder cousin whose rim trail circles the entire summit with unbroken views over the valley 1,400 feet below. Day one hikes Petit Jean's iconic canyon to Cedar Falls; day two circles Mount Nebo's rim before the drive home. A night at the historic Mather Lodge on Petit Jean's rim anchors the trip.

★ 4.8Petit Jean was the birthplace of the entire Arkansas state park system in 1923, and the visitor center tells the story of both the mountain and the Civilian Conservation Corps crews who built it out in the 1930s. Exhibits trace the legend of Petit Jean — the French girl who supposedly disguised herself to follow her explorer betrothed to the New World — and the geology of the mesa-like mountain. Rangers post current trail conditions for Cedar Falls and the Grotto, both of which can be slick after rain. Orient here and fill water bottles before the canyon hike.

Mather Lodge Restaurant
Before dropping into the canyon, take an early lunch at the restaurant inside Mather Lodge, the only CCC-built lodge in Arkansas and a rustic gem of stone and timber perched on the canyon rim. The dining room windows look straight down into the Cedar Creek gorge you are about to hike. The menu runs to hearty American fare — sandwiches, plates, and Southern comfort dishes — the right fuel for the afternoon's descent. Fueling here also lets you travel light into the canyon.

Cedar Falls Trail
★ 4.8The signature hike of Petit Jean, and one of the finest in Arkansas: a 2-mile round trip that drops steeply off the rim into the Cedar Creek canyon and follows the stream to the base of the 95-foot Cedar Falls, which plunges over a sandstone ledge into a wide emerald pool. The CCC-built stone trail is a work of craftsmanship in itself, switchbacking down past bluff shelters and mossy boulders. The descent is real — expect a sustained climb back out — but the payoff at the falls, roaring after rain and framed by canyon walls, is among the great waterfall scenes in the state. Wear grippy shoes for the wet rock near the base.

The Grotto & Bear Cave Trail
★ 4.9A short, family-friendly scramble leads to the Grotto, a shaded natural amphitheater where a small stream trickles over a rock overhang into a cool cove — a magical, sheltered spot on a warm afternoon. Nearby, the Bear Cave / Rock House Cave area is a playground of house-sized sandstone boulders, crevices, and passages, including a rock shelter with ancient Native American pictographs. The walking is easy and endlessly explorable, and it makes a perfect lower-effort complement to the morning's canyon descent. Kids and adults alike lose track of time in the boulder maze.

Stout's Point & Cedar Creek Overlook
★ 5Close the day at the mountain's overlooks. Stout's Point, at the mountain's eastern nose, holds the legendary grave of Petit Jean and offers a sweeping view over the Arkansas River winding through the valley 800 feet below. The nearby Cedar Creek overlook peers back into the canyon you hiked earlier, the falls now a distant thread. These are the best sunset positions on the mountain, with the river valley turning gold as the light drops. An easy, rewarding finish before checking in for the night.

Mather Lodge, Petit Jean
Stay the night at Mather Lodge, the CCC-built stone-and-log lodge on the canyon rim — the historic heart of the park and by far the best base for the trip. Choose a lodge room or one of the rustic cabins scattered through the woods nearby, several with fireplaces and canyon views. Waking on the rim puts you minutes from the trails and lets you cross the river early to Mount Nebo the next morning. Book well ahead; the lodge fills on weekends and in peak fall color.

Rim Trail — Mount Nebo
Cross the Arkansas River to Mount Nebo, a steep 1,350-foot mesa reached by a switchbacking road so tight that trailers are prohibited on the final climb. The Rim Trail circles the entire flat summit in a roughly 3-mile loop, threading in and out of the forest to a series of bluff-edge overlooks that face every direction. Views open onto Lake Dardanelle, the Arkansas River, the distant Ouachita ridges, and Petit Jean itself across the valley. The trail is mostly level along the plateau edge with a few rocky stretches, and hang-glider launch points along the rim mark the airiest overlooks. Go clockwise to save the finest western views for late morning light.

Sunset Point & Fern Lake Trail
★ 4.8Sunset Point is Mount Nebo's premier overlook, a broad west-facing bluff staring straight down at the Arkansas River and Lake Dardanelle spreading across the valley floor — one of the great panoramas in the state. From here a short spur drops to Fern Lake, a small, quiet CCC-built impoundment tucked below the rim, cool and green and good for a shaded pause and lunch. The combination of the big overlook and the hidden pocket lake captures Mount Nebo's appeal in a compact walk. Eat the packed lunch at Sunset Point or lakeside before continuing the loop.

★ 4.3Descending from the mountain, the river town of Dardanelle and nearby Russellville offer a proper sit-down meal before the long drive east — catfish houses, barbecue, and casual American spots along the Arkansas River. Russellville, just across the river, has the widest range of options if Dardanelle is quiet.
