The Red River Gorge Geological Area in eastern Kentucky is one of the most spectacular natural landscapes east of the Mississippi — a labyrinth of sandstone cliffs, natural arches, and forested ridges carved by the Red River and its tributaries over millions of years into a landscape unlike anything else in the region. Day one explores Natural Bridge State Resort Park, including the park's signature sandstone arch via the Original Trail and the aerial Sky Lift, before settling into the Slade area for the night. Day two ventures into the heart of the gorge with the Auxier Ridge Trail's stunning open ridgeline panoramas, Gray's Arch (one of the largest natural arches in the eastern United States), and the beloved climbers' institution of Miguel's Pizza. This is serious hiking country — the Red River Gorge hosts over 100 miles of trail and some of the most celebrated sport climbing in North America.

Natural Bridge — Original Trail

The Original Trail climbs 0.75 miles from the valley floor through rhododendron tunnels and hardwood forest to the arch's walkable top, where the views of the surrounding gorge country are expansive. The Balanced Rock Trail continues from the arch to additional sandstone formations and overlooks. The park was established in 1926 specifically to protect the arch, making it one of Kentucky's oldest preserved natural areas.

The trail follows a narrow, open sandstone ridge for nearly a mile with sheer drops on both sides into the Red River gorge — an exposed ridgeline walk unlike anything else in the region. The views from the ridge are 360-degree panoramas of the gorge country below: sandstone cliffs, forested hollows, the Red River glinting in the canyon, and ridge after ridge of the Daniel Boone National Forest extending to the horizon. Double Arch, a remarkable twin sandstone arch formation, is visible from the ridgeline and accessible via a short spur. The full loop from the Double Arch trailhead via Auxier Ridge and Buck Trail is approximately 5.5 miles and is considered moderately difficult.

Miguel's Pizza
Miguel's Pizza in Slade, Kentucky is one of the most beloved institutions in American climbing culture — a ramshackle restaurant and campground that has been feeding climbers since 1984 and has become the de facto social hub of the Red River Gorge. Miguel's serves generous, reasonably priced pizzas with an absurdly long list of topping combinations, along with calzones and sandwiches, from a counter in a converted barn. The picnic tables outside are always full of gear-laden climbers comparing notes on routes, and the hand-drawn route maps and worn topo guides pinned to the walls are as much a part of the experience as the food. Even if you haven't been climbing, lunching here feels like participation in something genuine and joyful.

★ 4.9Gray's Arch is one of the largest natural arches in the eastern United States, with a span of 80 feet and a clearance of 50 feet — a massive sandstone bridge soaring over a narrow gorge tributary. The 2.5-mile round trip from the trailhead descends into the gorge through dense rhododendron and hemlock, passing streambeds and boulder fields before arriving at the arch's base, where its full scale becomes apparent. The arch is a popular rock climbing destination as well as a hiking destination, and on most days you can watch climbers working the routes on the arch's face. A short detour from the main trail leads to Indian Arch, a smaller but beautifully proportioned overhang shelter that shows evidence of prehistoric use as a rock shelter.
