Big South Fork & Red River Gorge: The Southern Cumberland Plateau
The Cumberland Plateau south and southeast of Nashville contains the most rugged and least-visited backcountry accessible from a major southern city. Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area — a 125,000-acre reserve in northern Tennessee and southeastern Kentucky — protects the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River, which carved a 300-foot sandstone gorge through the plateau. The gorge contains natural arches, balanced rocks, and hemlock-lined tributaries accessible by 150 miles of trail. Red River Gorge in Daniel Boone National Forest (3.5 hours from Nashville) is the premier rock climbing destination in the eastern United States and a remarkable hiking landscape of sandstone arches and slot canyons in the Kentucky Knobs.
