Leiper's Fork & Arrington Vineyards: Nashville's Wine Country

Twenty-five miles south of Nashville, the forested hills of Williamson County contain two of the most enjoyable half-days accessible from any American city. Leiper's Fork — a crossroads village on the old Natchez Trace where country music artists have lived since the 1970s — has antique shops, art galleries, and a general store in a setting that looks like 1950s Tennessee. Puckett's Grocery & Restaurant in Leiper's Fork is the genuine article: a working general store converted into a gathering place with live music on weekend evenings and food that reflects what the county actually eats. Arrington Vineyards, 15 minutes east on 400 rolling acres, is owned by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill and is one of the most scenically situated wineries in the South — the tasting terrace looks over vineyard rows and the limestone hills of the Harpeth River watershed. Open Tuesday through Sunday, with live bluegrass on most weekends.

The anchor of Leiper's Fork — a working general store that evolved into the social center of one of the most musically concentrated rural communities in America. Country music artists from Vince Gill to Willie Nelson have lived in the Fork; Puckett's is where they eat. The breakfast biscuits and the Tennessee hot chicken are the morning draws; lunch shifts to meat-and-three plates. Live music on weekend evenings; the grocery shelves in the back still sell staples to the neighbors who've shopped here for generations.

The village itself — a crossroads on the Natchez Trace where the main intersection has a handful of galleries, antique shops, and the Fork's Drum Closet (a famous music equipment store with an attached recording studio). Walk the quarter-mile strip, browse the folk art galleries, and understand why so many country music figures chose to live in a place that looks nothing like the city 25 miles north.

A 400-acre vineyard in the Harpeth River hills owned by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill — one of the most scenically situated wineries in the American South. The tasting terrace overlooks the vineyard rows and the rolling limestone hills beyond; the permanent pavilion hosts live bluegrass and acoustic performances on most weekend afternoons. The Keg and Barrel wines are the flagship; the Stag's White is the most consistent. Open Tuesday through Sunday; arrive with a blanket and plan to stay for a few hours.
