Mammoth Cave — Walking the World's Longest Cave System

The Historic Tour is the definitive Mammoth Cave experience — a two-hour, 2-mile guided walk through the cave's most historically significant and architecturally dramatic passages. The Rotunda, the cave's largest room at 200 feet in diameter, still contains the wooden pipes, hoppers, and vats of the Civil War-era saltpeter mining operation that extracted potassium nitrate for gunpowder from the cave soil; the operation ran from 1812 through the War of 1812 and employed enslaved workers. Gothic Avenue is lined with the carved and smoked signatures of thousands of nineteenth-century tourists who visited by oil lamp and torchlight beginning in the 1810s — a rare and haunting form of historical graffiti. The Methodist Church passage is so large that a 19th-century preacher regularly held services for congregations inside. Mammoth Cave was explored and guided by enslaved men — most famously Stephen Bishop, who mapped hundreds of miles of passages in the 1830s and 1840s and became internationally celebrated as the cave's foremost guide. The Mammoth Cave Hotel, operated by the National Park Service concessioner, has a full-service dining room offering a comfortable midday lunch after the cave tour. The menu covers American comfort classics — soups, sandwiches, country ham, and seasonal specials — in a pleasant dining room that looks out toward the historic hotel grounds. The hotel itself has operated in various forms since the 1830s, making it one of the oldest continuously operating tourist accommodations in the United States.

The Houchin Ferry is a small cable-drawn automobile ferry that crosses the Green River within Mammoth Cave National Park — one of only a handful of operating ferries on inland rivers in the eastern United States. The crossing takes just a few minutes and costs a nominal fee, but the experience of riding across the green, clear water of the Green River on a flat-bottomed cable ferry in a national park is pleasantly anachronistic. The crossing connects the cave's south entrance road to the river valley hiking trails on the north side.

The river valley above Mammoth Cave is an extraordinary biological landscape — the cave system below drains water from 70 square miles of surface terrain, making the Green River one of the most biodiverse river systems in North America, with 151 species of fish and 70 species of freshwater mussels. The bluff trail above the Green River wanders through old-growth river bottom forest of towering sycamores, cottonwoods, and silver maples with wildflower-rich understory. White-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and great blue herons are common afternoon sightings along the river corridor.
