Cajun Country Day Trip: Breaux Bridge, Vermilionville & Lafayette

Vermilionville is a 23-acre living history park on the banks of Bayou Vermilion that recreates Cajun-Creole bayou life from 1765 to 1890 through 18 restored and reconstructed historic structures — Creole cottages, barns, a chapel, a working boucherie house, and a blacksmith shop — staffed by interpreters in period dress who demonstrate cooking, weaving, and woodworking. The name recalls Lafayette's original designation: the city was called Vermilionville until 1884 when it was renamed to honor the Marquis de Lafayette. The on-site La Cuisine de Maman restaurant serves authentic Cajun cooking made with period-accurate techniques. The music hall hosts live Cajun and zydeco performances most weekends.

The Acadian Cultural Center in Lafayette is one of three units of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park dedicated to Cajun heritage — the others are in Eunice and Thibodaux — and it offers the most comprehensive introduction to the Grand Dérangement (the 1755 British deportation of 10,000 Acadians from Nova Scotia) and the subsequent two-decade migration that brought the survivors to Louisiana. The free museum's films, artifacts, and interpretive displays trace how the exiles transformed a difficult bayou landscape into one of the most distinctive folk cultures in the Western Hemisphere. The 40-minute film 'The Cajun Way: Echoes of Acadia' is among the best documentary introductions to Louisiana Cajun culture available.
