Breakneck Ridge Scramble & Cold Spring Riverfront

The trail begins with 900 feet of exposed granite scrambling in the first half mile — hands-on-rock climbing sections, not hiking. The ridge above opens to 360-degree views of the Hudson River gorge, Storm King Mountain across the river, and the Hudson Highlands as they narrow toward the Highlands Gate. The full loop (4.5 miles) continues along the ridge before descending through Notch Trail and returning along the river's edge.

Cold Spring is the most intact 19th-century river town on the Hudson — a single commercial block on Main Street descending to a gazebo and dock above the Narrows. The West Point Foundry site at the south end of town is a National Historic Landmark where the Parrott rifle was manufactured; the ruins are in a linear park along the Foundry Cove inlet.

A Cold Spring cafe on Main Street that has served hikers and day-trippers since 2003, with house-made soups, sandwiches, and baked goods using local Hudson Valley ingredients. The blackboard menu changes daily; the tomato-cheddar soup and the turkey-avocado sandwich are the perennial anchors.

A 30-acre peninsula jutting into the Hudson River directly across from Breakneck Ridge, accessible via a path from the Cold Spring waterfront. The peninsula's southern tip provides the best close-up view of Breakneck Ridge's granite face from water level; the river swimming is possible on calm summer days, and the rock ledges are used for fishing. The Hudson River School painters used this vantage point in the 1840s.
