Sleepy Hollow: Washington Irving & Kykuit Rockefeller Estate

The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery on Broadway contains the graves of Washington Irving, Andrew Carnegie, William Rockefeller, and 200 years of Hudson River Valley history. The Old Dutch Church adjacent to the cemetery dates to 1685 and is the oldest church building in New York; the stone bridge over the Pocantico River behind the church is the 'Headless Horseman Bridge' of Irving's 1820 story. The cemetery's landscape design by Jacob Weidenmann (1862) makes it one of the finest 19th-century cemetery designs in the US.

The Rockefeller family estate built for Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller Sr. in 1913 — a six-story beaux-arts house on a hilltop above the Hudson, with a Philip Johnson-designed outdoor sculpture garden containing 70 significant 20th-century works — Calder stabiles, Picasso bronzes, Brancusi sculptures, and the entirety of Nelson Rockefeller's major acquisitions. Tours of the house show the Rockefeller family's collection of Asian export porcelain, Flemish tapestries, and Hudson River School paintings in their original domestic context.

A cafe adjacent to the 1885 Music Hall in Tarrytown — one of the oldest operating music venues in the US — serving lunch and coffee in a room that has hosted the Hudson Valley arts community for 140 years. The Music Hall's performance schedule is active year-round; the adjacent cafeteria serves simple New American lunch fare.

A Gothic Revival mansion on the Hudson River at Tarrytown, designed by Alexander Jackson Davis in 1838 for William Paulding, former mayor of New York City, and now a National Trust for Historic Preservation property — Jay Gould purchased the estate in 1880. The 14-acre grounds include the carriage house, an 1880 greenhouse complex, and formal Victorian gardens above the river. The house tour shows Davis's Gothic Revival interiors — the plaster vaulting, the pointed windows, and the original 1838 furnishings.
