Lake Tenkiller & the Illinois River in the Cookson Hills

Three days in the green, hilly northeast corner of Oklahoma, where the Ozark foothills — the Cookson Hills — rise into oak forest above the clearest water in the state. Day one settles on Lake Tenkiller, famous among divers and swimmers for its exceptional clarity, with an afternoon of paddling and shoreline trails from the Cherokee Landing area on the lake's quiet upper end. Day two heads to the Illinois River, Oklahoma's premier float stream, for a lazy but active day paddling a canoe or kayak through the wooded hills, followed by birding at the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge where the river meets the Arkansas. Day three winds along the Cherokee Hills Byway through the forest and finishes at Greenleaf and the Tenkiller dam overlook before the long drive home. Overnights near the lake and river country keep you close to the water throughout.

On the quiet upper arm of Lake Tenkiller, Cherokee Landing is a small, wooded state park that makes an ideal introduction to the lake's famously clear, blue-green water. After the long drive from Oklahoma City it is a place to stretch out: launch a kayak from the ramp, swim off the shoreline, or walk the short trails through the oak-hickory woods that ring the coves. Tenkiller is fed by the cold, clean Illinois River and is renowned among scuba divers for its clarity — you can often see well down into the water from the bank. The park's forested campground and picnic areas are a peaceful base for the first afternoon.

The marinas and resorts ringing Lake Tenkiller support a handful of casual lakeside grills serving burgers, catfish, and cold drinks to boaters and swimmers — the natural spot for a first meal in the area. Sitting on a deck over the water with the wooded hills across the coves sets the tone for the days ahead. Options cluster around the Strayhorn and Pettit Bay areas of the lake; pick whichever is nearest your route in. Stock up on any groceries and ice here too, since services are spread out around the big lake.

The afternoon is for getting on and around the water. Paddle a kayak or canoe out of one of the sheltered coves — the clarity of Tenkiller is startling, and the wooded shoreline hides quiet inlets to explore — or walk one of the bluff-top overlooks for a wide view down the lake between the Cookson Hills. Swimming from the rocky shoreline is excellent in the clean, cool water. Watch the wind and afternoon boat traffic on the main lake body, and keep to the coves if you're new to paddling. Time your last stretch for the low light, when the hills and water glow.

Tenkiller Lakeside Cabin or Lodge
Stay the night at one of the lakeside cabins, lodges, or resorts scattered around Lake Tenkiller near the Cookson and Pettit Bay areas — several marinas rent cabins directly on the water, and Cherokee Landing has campsites for those who prefer to pitch a tent. Booking near the lake keeps you close for tomorrow's early start on the Illinois River just upstream. Summer weekends fill quickly, so reserve ahead. Spend the evening on a dock or deck watching the sunset color the water and the surrounding hills.

The Illinois River is Oklahoma's premier float stream — a clear, spring-fed river winding through the forested Cookson Hills, cool enough to feed Lake Tenkiller downstream and lively enough for a genuinely fun day of paddling. Numerous outfitters upstream rent canoes, kayaks, and rafts and run shuttles, so you can put in and drift a scenic stretch of gentle riffles and calm pools past gravel bars and overhanging sycamores. It is active but unhurried: paddle when you like, swim off a gravel bar when you don't, and let the current do the work. Wear water shoes and secure your gear; spring floats can move fast after rain, while summer levels are lazy and warm. Check the outfitter for current river conditions before launching.

Midway down the float, pull the boat onto a gravel bar for a riverside lunch — a packed picnic eaten with your feet in the cool clear water is one of the great pleasures of an Illinois River day. The gravel bars are the classic rest-and-swim spots, shaded in places by the riverbank trees. Pack out everything you bring, and keep food secured from the ever-present raccoons and crows. If you'd rather a hot meal, the float outfitters near the put-ins usually have a grill or snack bar at their base camps.

Where the Arkansas and Canadian rivers meet at the head of Robert S. Kerr Lake, the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge protects thousands of acres of bottomland forest, marsh, and open water that draw enormous numbers of migrating and wintering birds. An auto-tour route and several short walking trails and observation points let you look for bald eagles, herons, pelicans, and rafts of waterfowl, with the best birding in fall and winter. Bring binoculars and drive the tour loop slowly; early morning and late afternoon are the most active hours. It is a quieter, wilder end to the day after the busy river, and a fine place to watch the light fade over the water.

Tenkiller-Area Lakeside Lodging
Return to a lakeside cabin or resort in the Lake Tenkiller area for the second night, keeping you close to the water and positioned for tomorrow's byway drive north. Cabins and lodges around the lake's coves offer the most atmospheric stay, while smaller resorts along the Illinois River corridor are an alternative if you'd rather be near the float country. Reserve ahead on summer weekends. Enjoy a relaxed dinner at a lakeside grill and turn in early after a full day on the water.

The Cherokee Hills Byway winds through the wooded ridges and hollows of the Cookson Hills, one of the most scenic drives in Oklahoma and a showcase of the state's Ozark-foothill country. Pull-offs and overlooks along the route open onto long views across the forested hills, especially fine in the morning light and spectacular in autumn when the oak and hickory turn. Short legs to roadside overlooks let you stretch and take in the country without committing to a long hike on the final day. Drive it unhurried, stopping wherever a view opens up, and watch for wildlife in the early hours.

Greenleaf State Park, wrapped around a small clear lake in the hills, makes a relaxed midday stop with a picnic area and seasonal park concessions near the water. Grab a casual bite or spread out a picnic by the lake before the long haul home, with the wooded shoreline and the park's famous suspension footbridge nearby. It is a peaceful, green setting to rest and refuel. If concessions are closed, the town of Muskogee to the west has full-service restaurants a short drive off the route.

Greenleaf Lake Trail & Suspension Bridge

Greenleaf's signature feature is a long swinging suspension footbridge over the lake, the gateway to a wooded lakeside trail system that loops through oak forest above the clear water. A stretch of the Greenleaf Lake Trail — even just out to and across the bridge and back — is a fine way to work off the drive and take a last walk in the northeast Oklahoma hills before turning for home. The full backpacking loop circles the lake for those with time, but a short out-and-back captures the best of it. Watch your footing on the bridge, which sways underfoot, and carry water for the wooded trail.
