A relaxed loop up the historic Mother Road, this day trip follows Route 66 northeast out of Oklahoma City to the tiny community of Arcadia, where two of the most photographed roadside landmarks in the state sit within a mile of each other. The gambrel-roofed Round Barn of 1898 — an improbable circle of bur oak that has become the unofficial symbol of Oklahoma's Route 66 — anchors the morning, followed by POPS 66, the aluminum-and-glass soda ranch fronted by a 66-foot illuminated soda bottle and stocked with more than 700 kinds of pop. The afternoon drifts to the wooded shore of Lake Arcadia for a lakeside stroll, then continues east to Chandler and its immersive Route 66 Interpretive Center, where you can recline on a vintage motor-court bed and watch the road roll by on screen. It is nostalgia at an easy pace, all within forty minutes of downtown.

Arcadia Round Barn
★ 4.6Built in 1898 by farmer William Odor, the Arcadia Round Barn is one of the only truly round barns in the country and the single most recognizable landmark on Oklahoma's stretch of Route 66. Odor soaked bur oak boards and bent them to form the sixty-foot circular walls and the remarkable self-supporting domed loft above, a piece of folk engineering that has drawn travelers for more than a century. Restored by a band of retired volunteers in the late 1980s after the roof had collapsed, the barn now houses a small museum of Route 66 memorabilia on the ground floor. Climb up into the loft to see the astonishing curved-rib ceiling and to hear how sound travels around the circular room. Admission is free, and the volunteer keepers are a fount of Mother Road stories.

The kitchen turns out proper diner fare — burgers, hand-dipped shakes, breakfast all day, and green-chile cheeseburgers — making it an easy, fun lunch stop. Grab a bottle or two of oddball soda to take on the road, and step outside to photograph the giant bottle against the plains sky.

Chandler Route 66 Interpretive Center

Rather than glass cases, it invites you to experience the road: recline on a vintage motor-court bed, sink into a drive-in theater seat, or settle into the bench of an old car while archival film of Route 66 plays overhead. The immersive exhibits trace the highway's arc from Dust Bowl migration route to postwar family-vacation icon to bypassed back road, all with an unusually artful touch. It makes a fitting, reflective close to a day spent following the old road, and the town of Chandler has a few cafes if you want an early supper before rolling home.
