Opal Creek Wilderness & Tamanawas Falls
Oregon's most celebrated old-growth canyon system sits 60 miles east of Portland in the Little North Santiam drainage — Opal Creek Wilderness preserves one of the last unlogged watersheds in the Oregon Cascades, with swimming holes the color of turquoise glass and 500-year-old cedar and Douglas fir. Day two heads north to the Hood River Valley for Tamanawas Falls, a 100-foot curtain waterfall reached by a 4-mile round trip through old-growth cedar and fir in the Mt. Hood National Forest.

Opal Creek Trail
The 6-mile round-trip to Opal Pool follows the Little North Santiam River through old-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar — trees 500 years old, trunks 8 feet in diameter, the understory carpeted in oxalis and vanilla leaf. The trail crosses the river on log bridges; Opal Pool itself is a deep swimming hole stained turquoise by mineral seeps in the bedrock. In late summer the water temperature is tolerable.

A 7-mile round-trip from Beachie Creek Trailhead climbs 2,700 feet through old-growth forest and burned snag fields to a bare rocky summit at 5,558 feet — the 360-degree view encompasses Opal Creek's entire watershed, Mt. Jefferson to the south, and the Cascades as far as Hood and Rainier. The summit sits above the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire scar; the transition from live forest to the burn zone is dramatic.
