Willamette Valley Slow Tour: Wine, Farms & Hot Springs

Founded in 1971 by David and Ginny Adelsheim — one of the valley's founding estates — the Chehalem Mountains property produces benchmark Pinot Gris alongside Pinot Noir from original estate vines now over 50 years old. The covered porch tasting room overlooks the estate vineyard and the surrounding hills.

The heritage park includes the original Manson barn (1862), the Robert Newell House (1852), and a nature trail through the riverside cottonwood forest that defines the Willamette Valley's agricultural character.

A 150-acre organic farm outside Philomath that has farmed the Willamette Valley floor since 1987 — the farm stand is open during harvest season with the most complete selection of organic Willamette Valley produce available outside a farmers market. Corvallis's flagship craft brewery on the downtown main street — the small-batch experimental program produces some of Oregon's most ambitious wild and barrel-aged beers alongside the accessible pub lineup. The Ridgeback Stout and the Wandelaar Wit are the house standards; the Belgian-influenced program distinguishes Block 15 from its Willamette Valley peers.

A 3-mile round-trip through old-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar to one of Oregon's most beloved natural hot spring experiences — the cedar-hewn soaking tubs at Bagby are filled by 136°F water piped from the spring source, hand-maintained by volunteer crews since the 1930s. The tubs in the open bathhouse are available on a first-come basis; the private tub rooms require more patience but provide the full old-growth forest soaking experience.

A 3,580-acre reservoir formed by the 1953 Detroit Dam on the North Santiam River — the surrounding forested hills and the cold blue water of the reservoir create a mountain lake atmosphere within 90 minutes of Portland. Boat rentals, fishing for rainbow trout and kokanee salmon, and the 2-mile Mongold Day Use Area shoreline walk are the afternoon options.

The North Santiam between Mill City and Stayton runs through a valley of small farms, hop yards, and basalt canyon walls — the river is clear and cold, with a public fishing access at the Mehama Bridge and the 1.5-mile Opal Creek Day Use Trail beginning just downstream. The canyon walls along Highway 22 west of Detroit hold exposures of the Salmon River lava flows.

The most reliable sit-down dinner in the North Santiam canyon, attached to the Cedars Lodge in Mill City — a straightforward kitchen serving Pacific Northwest standards (salmon, burgers, pasta) to the outdoor recreation crowd that funnels through this canyon town between the Cascades and the valley floor. Unpretentious, consistently good, and a practical refueling stop before the 75-minute drive back to Portland through the canyon and farmland west of Salem.
