The full loop runs about eleven miles, but it is easily sampled as a shorter out-and-back — a few miles delivers the essential character of coves, wildflower slopes in spring, and quiet inlets where deer come down to drink. The path rolls gently rather than climbing hard, making it a good leg-stretcher on arrival day. Lizards, quail, and hawks are constant company, and the oaks give welcome shade. Feather Falls Trail

The trail reaches it via a loop of roughly nine miles round trip, descending through mixed-conifer and oak forest, crossing wildflower-strewn hillsides, and arriving at a railed overlook platform that juts out toward the cascade with the full drop in view. It is a genuine backcountry hike — moderate but sustained, with real elevation change on the return — best done in spring and early summer when the flow is strongest and the heat has not yet built. Carry ample water and an early start; the canyon bakes by midday. The overlook itself is one of the great waterfall viewpoints in Northern California.

The reserve sits atop a flat basalt mesa — the remains of an ancient lava flow — carpeted from March through May in sheets of goldfields, lupine, poppies, and meadowfoam, threaded with vernal pools and seasonal creeks that pour off the mesa's rim as ephemeral waterfalls, notably the multi-tiered Phantom and Ravine Falls. The walking is easy and open, over grassland and volcanic rock, with the flowers and the falls the whole point. Outside the spring bloom the mesa is still a fine open ramble with big views, but time this leg for peak flower season if you can. Wear sturdy shoes for the uneven basalt and watch footing near the falls' edges.
