Inside, the museum mounts ambitious rotating exhibitions of contemporary art and celebrates the legacy of the mid-century UC Davis art faculty, a remarkable group that included Wayne Thiebaud, Robert Arneson, and Manuel Neri who together made Davis an unlikely capital of California art. Admission is free, and the airy, light-filled spaces reward an unhurried hour. The gift shop and outdoor sculpture areas are worth a look before moving on to lunch.

On the edge of Woodland stands one of the largest collections of antique agricultural machinery in the country, a fitting monument to the region that feeds much of America. Housed in a cavernous pair of pavilions, the Heidrick center displays hundreds of meticulously restored tractors, steam engines, mule-drawn harvesters, and the pioneering Best and Holt crawlers that evolved into the modern Caterpillar. The exhibits trace the mechanization of Central Valley farming from horse-and-plow days through the diesel age, with plenty of gleaming brass and painted iron to admire. It is a surprisingly absorbing final stop that puts the surrounding sea of tomato and rice fields into vivid context before the short drive back to Sacramento. Check seasonal hours, as the center sometimes closes earlier in the afternoon.
