Marysville, a booming supply town for the northern gold fields, still guards the Bok Kai Temple — the oldest Chinese temple in continuous use in the state and the site of a Bomb Day festival that has run every spring for well over a century. Bok Kai Temple
★ 4.4Tucked against the levee at the foot of D Street, the Bok Kai Temple is the oldest Chinese temple in continuous use in California, dating in its present form to 1880 and dedicated to Bok Eye, the water god who was believed to protect flood-prone Marysville. Inside, the incense-darkened altar room glows with gilded carvings, hanging lanterns, and one of the finest surviving collections of nineteenth-century Chinese temple art in America, much of it shipped from Guangdong. The temple anchors the Bomb Day festival each spring, a tradition running since the 1880s in which the community scrambles for lucky rings blasted from an aerial bomb. Docent-led visits are limited, so check the schedule in advance. The temple stands as a moving reminder of the Chinese laborers whose work built the levees, railroads, and mines of the northern gold country.

★ 3.9In the middle of Marysville lies Ellis Lake, a graceful 32-acre urban lake whose curving shoreline and central islands were laid out in 1924 to a design influenced by the great landscape architect John McLaren of Golden Gate Park fame. Ringed by palm trees, weeping willows, and a walking path lit by antique-style lamps, it is the city's most beloved gathering place and a serene spot to unwind as the light softens over the water. Ducks and geese paddle among the fountains, and benches invite a slow lap on foot. It makes a peaceful close to the day before the drive south back to Sacramento.
