Timpanogos Cave National Monument sits 1,065 feet above American Fork Canyon on a granite slab approached by one of the steepest maintained trails in the National Park system, and the three connected caverns at the top contain some of the most unusual cave formations in North America — helictites that grow in every direction regardless of gravity, massive stalactites, and formations that have been developing for more than 9,000 years in the mountain's limestone heart. Timpanogos Cave Trail
The approach to Timpanogos Cave National Monument is itself a significant physical undertaking: a 1.5-mile trail gains 1,065 feet in elevation over paved switchbacks cut into the granite face of American Fork Canyon, ascending through three distinct vegetation zones from cottonwood-and-oak canyon bottom to alpine fir near the cave entrance at 6,730 feet. The trail was first cut in 1921 and improved continuously since; ranger-led tours depart from the cave entrance on timed reservations (advance booking is strongly recommended in summer). The caves — Hansen Cave, Middle Cave, and Chimes Cave — were discovered sequentially between 1887 and 1921 and are connected by hand-carved tunnels; the combined tour covers 0.6 miles underground in constant 45°F temperature.

Bridal Veil Falls — Provo Canyon
★ 4.7On the return route through Provo Canyon (US-189), Bridal Veil Falls drops 607 feet in a double-cataract over Wasatch quartzite — one of the tallest waterfalls in Utah, visible from the highway and accessible via a 1-mile walk to the base. The falls were the upper terminus of the Bridal Veil Falls aerial tramway (1961–1996), a funicular that carried visitors 1,228 feet to an observation deck and restaurant before an avalanche destroyed the structure in 1996. The tramway ruins are still partially visible on the cliff face.
