Utah Pioneer & Carbon County: Olympic Heritage, Coal Country, and the World's Longest Art Gallery

The 400-acre complex above Park City that hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics still operates all of its original venues: the 90-meter and 120-meter ski jump towers, the Nordic combined course, the biathlon range, and the bobsled/skeleton/luge track that visitors can ride at 80 mph in summer. The Alf Engen Ski Museum traces the full arc of Utah skiing from Norwegian immigrant Alf Engen's 1940s ski school at Alta through the Wasatch snowpack's discovery by the ski industry in the 1960s to the Olympic bid and the 2002 Games. Aerial ski training over the splash pool runs Tuesday through Saturday in summer, with elite athletes visible from the museum viewing deck.

The 1885 calaboose (city jail) at 528 Main Street, with original iron cells intact, tells the complete story of the silver-mining boomtown that rose from the 1868 Ontario Mine strike to 10,000 residents and $400 million in ore output before the silver panic and the decline. The museum's exhibits document the ethnic workforce — Welsh, Cornish, Finnish, and Irish miners in segregated boardinghouses — the 1898 fire that consumed the wooden downtown, the brick rebuilding, and the long dormancy before skiing transformed the town.

Seven blocks of intact Victorian commercial architecture on the National Register of Historic Places, anchored by the Egyptian Theatre (1926), the 1903 Rocky Mountain Power building, and the Town Lift gondola terminal that connects the historic district to the ski mountain. The silver-boom buildings were rebuilt in brick after the 1898 fire, which is why Main Street survived while most other Utah mining towns did not.

Helper sits at the mouth of Price River Canyon, named for the helper locomotives that were added to trains to push coal cars up the steep canyon grade. The 1914 former hotel that houses this free museum preserves the complete story of Carbon County's coal economy: the Welsh and Italian immigrant miners who dug the Book Cliffs seams from the 1880s onward, the 1933 Hunger March in which unemployed miners marched to the state capitol, the labor union battles, and the slow decline of the coal industry after World War II. The museum's outdoor collection includes a restored 1920s steam locomotive, coal tipple models, and mining equipment from the operating mines.

Helper's downtown has been discovered by artists attracted by the cheap historic buildings, the dramatic canyon setting, and the authentic working-class architecture that survived because the town never became prosperous enough to tear anything down. The resulting mix of 1920s storefronts, murals, sculpture gardens, and small galleries makes Helper one of the most unexpected art towns in the Intermountain West — the Art Walk runs the second Saturday of each month.

Utah State University's eastern campus hosts what is arguably the finest dinosaur collection in the Rocky Mountain region: a Utahraptor skeleton (the species that Jurassic Park's Velociraptors were actually modeled on — Velociraptors were turkey-sized; Utahraptors were human-sized), an Allosaurus that was excavated from the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry 30 miles south, and a Camarasaurus — one of the most complete sauropod specimens in any public collection. The museum also displays the most significant Fremont culture artifact collection in Utah, including textiles, ceramics, and the only known complete Fremont moccasin.

The drive from Price through the canyon that the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad followed into the coalfields is one of Utah's most historically layered scenic routes: the Book Cliffs rise 2,000 feet above the canyon floor, the railroad cuts and coal tipple ruins appear at regular intervals, and the geology exposes the Cretaceous coal seams that made Carbon County economically significant.

Nine Mile Canyon is not nine miles long — it is 40 miles of paved canyon road through the Book Cliffs north of Price, named for the nine-mile measurement on an 1877 government survey. The canyon contains more than 10,000 rock art images — the highest concentration of Fremont and Ute petroglyphs and pictographs in the world — pecked or painted on the Navajo sandstone walls over a period spanning roughly 400 to 1,300 CE. The Fremont people who created the majority of the images were contemporaries of the Ancestral Puebloans to the south; their distinctive trapezoidal human figures, bighorn sheep hunting panels, and handprint pictographs appear on cliff faces ranging from road level to 100 feet overhead.
