Canyonlands & Moab: Utah's Red Rock Wilderness
Four hours southeast of Salt Lake City, the Colorado River and the Green River have carved the Colorado Plateau into Canyonlands National Park — 337,598 acres of mesa, canyon, and desert that represents the most spectacular canyon landscape in North America after the Grand Canyon. Moab, Utah is the outdoor sports capital of the plateau and the practical base for Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. Three days here allows the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands (the flat mesa 1,000 feet above the canyon floor, accessible by day hike), the White Rim Road (a 100-mile 4WD circuit below the mesa), and Arches National Park (the world's greatest concentration of natural stone arches, including Delicate Arch). The mountain biking at Moab — the Slickrock Trail is the most famous technical mountain bike route in the world — adds an additional active dimension.
