Canyonlands & Moab: Utah's Red Rock Wilderness

Four hours southeast of Salt Lake City, the Colorado River and the Green River have carved the Colorado Plateau into Canyonlands National Park — 337,598 acres of mesa, canyon, and desert that represents the most spectacular canyon landscape in North America after the Grand Canyon. Moab, Utah is the outdoor sports capital of the plateau and the practical base for Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. Three days here allows the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands (the flat mesa 1,000 feet above the canyon floor, accessible by day hike), the White Rim Road (a 100-mile 4WD circuit below the mesa), and Arches National Park (the world's greatest concentration of natural stone arches, including Delicate Arch). The mountain biking at Moab — the Slickrock Trail is the most famous technical mountain bike route in the world — adds an additional active dimension.

Mesa Arch
Mesa Arch
4.9
A sandstone arch at the rim of the Island in the Sky mesa — the arch frames the canyon below and the La Sal Mountains on the eastern horizon, with the Colorado River visible 1,000 feet down the canyon wall. The 0.5-mile trail from the road is the most-visited hike in Canyonlands; sunrise at Mesa Arch is one of the iconic landscape photography moments in the American West. The underside of the arch glows orange in morning light.

Grand View Point
Grand View Point
5
The southernmost viewpoint on the Island in the Sky mesa — the 1.8-mile trail from the road to the point follows the mesa rim with views 1,000 feet down into the White Rim and the canyon maze below. At the point itself, the view encompasses all four canyons of the Colorado-Green confluence: the Colorado from the east, the Green from the northwest, and the Colorado below the confluence running south. On clear days the Henry Mountains 80 miles south are visible.

Afternoon
Upheaval Dome
Upheaval Dome
4.7
A circular geological anomaly on the Island in the Sky mesa — a 1.5-mile diameter depression in the Navajo Sandstone that may be either a salt diapir collapse or a meteorite impact crater (the debate among geologists is unresolved). The first overlook trail is 0.8 miles; the second overlook adds another 0.5 miles for a better view into the structure's center. The white salt deposits visible in the interior and the concentric rings of uplifted rock make Upheaval Dome look unlike anything else in Canyonlands.

Moab Brewery
Moab Brewery
4.1
The largest brewpub in southern Utah — the Dead Horse Amber and the Scorpion Pale are the house standards. The restaurant covers the full spectrum of post-hike food: burgers, burritos, and the sweet potato fries that every Moab visitor orders eventually.
Hyatt Place Moab
Hyatt Place Moab
4.5
Night 1 in Moab — the Hyatt Place Moab is the most consistent mid-range option in town, with a pool for post-hike soaking. Alternative: the Hoodoo Moab (a Curio Collection hotel) for a more distinctive desert-lodge experience.

Delicate Arch
Delicate Arch
4.9
The most recognizable natural arch in the world — a 65-foot freestanding Entrada Sandstone arch at the edge of a slickrock bowl above the Colorado River canyon. The 3-mile round trip with 480 feet of elevation gain crosses slickrock and a narrow ledge above a 200-foot drop before emerging at the bowl below the arch. Reserve a timed entry permit through Recreation.gov before visiting (required spring–fall). Delicate Arch at morning light or sunset against a blue sky is Utah's defining landscape image.

Lunch
Windows Section — Double Arch
Windows Section — Double Arch
4.9
The highest concentration of arches in Arches National Park — the Windows Section has North and South Window (two arches large enough to walk through), Turret Arch, and Double Arch within a half-mile of each other. Double Arch has the second-largest opening in the park (104 feet high); the trail passes directly under both spans. The Windows primitive loop (1 mile) allows views through all the major arches in late morning light.
☀️
Afternoon
Devils Garden — Landscape Arch
Devils Garden — Landscape Arch
5
The largest arch in North America — Landscape Arch has a span of 290 feet and a thickness at its narrowest point of 6 feet. The 1.6-mile trail from the Devils Garden trailhead passes 7 other named arches before reaching Landscape Arch. In 1991 a 60-foot slab fell from the underside of the arch; NPS closed the trail below it and the arch's eventual collapse is considered inevitable. The Devil's Garden Trail extension beyond Landscape Arch continues to Navajo Arch, Partition Arch, and Dark Angel — the full loop (7.8 miles) is the best long hike in Arches.
🌙
Evening
Desert Bistro
Desert Bistro
4.7
The best fine dining in Moab — a locally sourced New American menu in an 1896 house with a courtyard patio. The game meats and the Utah lamb are the menu anchors; the wine list includes Utah wines from the Castle Valley region. The most complete dinner experience available in southern Utah canyon country.

Morning
Colorado River Morning Float
Colorado River Morning Float
4.8
A half-day scenic float on the Colorado River through Fisher Towers section — the calm-water float from Hittle Bottom to Takeout Beach passes the Fisher Towers (3 ancient sandstone spires that rise 900 feet from the canyon floor) and the Castleton Tower above. Moab-based outfitters (Moab Adventure Center, Red River Adventures) run the half-day trip without white water; the canyon walls on the morning float are in direct light and the La Sal Mountains above reflect in the river.
🍽️
Lunch
Moab Giants Dinosaur Museum
Moab Giants Dinosaur Museum
4.3
A dinosaur track site and museum on the Colorado River 4 miles north of Moab — the Moab region was a dinosaur crossroads during the Morrison Formation period (150 million years ago); the Copper Ridge Sauropod Trackway visible from the museum parking area shows actual dinosaur footprints in the sandstone. The life-size dinosaur replicas in the outdoor paleontology trail are a useful scale reference for the track sites.
