Sundance & Provo Canyon: Waterfalls, Art Studios, and a Riverside Canyon Drive

Robert Redford purchased 5,000 acres on the north fork of Provo Canyon in 1969, intending to build a resort integrated with art and nature rather than optimized for commercial throughput. The result — the Sundance Institute, the Sundance Film Festival, and a deliberately small resort of just 3,000 beds — includes the Art Shack studios, open daily in summer, where resident artists work in ceramics, weaving, printmaking, and metalwork. Visitors can watch production, browse the galleries, and take hands-on workshops alongside the artists; the studios are one of the few working artist residency programs in the American West that is genuinely open to walk-in visitors.

A 4-mile round-trip trail from the Sundance property climbs through mixed aspen and fir forest, gaining 800 feet, to Stewart Falls — a twin-curtain waterfall dropping 200 feet over ancient quartzite on the north flank of Mount Timpanogos (11,752 ft). The trail is graded for moderate fitness and the payoff at the falls is substantial: the twin curtains drop into a pool in a glacially-carved amphitheater, and the surrounding conifer forest insulates the canyon from wind so the sound of falling water dominates the space completely.

On US-189 through Provo Canyon, Bridal Veil Falls drops 607 feet in a spectacular double-cataract over Wasatch quartzite — one of the tallest accessible waterfalls in Utah, visible from the highway and reachable via a 1-mile walk to the base. The falls were the upper terminus of the Bridal Veil Falls aerial tramway (1961–1996), a funicular that carried visitors 1,228 feet to an observation deck and restaurant on the cliff face before an avalanche destroyed the structure in January 1996. The rusted tramway towers and cable anchor points remain visible on the cliff, giving the waterfall an additional layer of industrial archaeology.

Vivian Park sits in the widest section of lower Provo Canyon where the canyon opens into cottonwood groves along the Provo River — a riverside picnic ground and fishing access point that families from Utah Valley have been using for summer afternoons since the 1930s. The Provo River below Vivian Park is one of Utah's Gold Medal trout fisheries, and fly fishers work the riffles and pools throughout the afternoon. A riverside walk in the cottonwood shade makes this the most restful stop in the canyon corridor.
