Cache Valley & Bear Lake Relaxed: Logan Tabernacle, Turquoise Water, and Minnetonka Cave
The northern three-day relaxed circuit from Salt Lake City moves gently through the Cache Valley and Bear Lake country — Logan's limestone tabernacle and artisan cheese culture on Day 1, a morning kayak on Bear Lake's Caribbean-blue water and the valley's celebrated raspberry milkshakes on Day 2, and Minnetonka Cave's 9-room limestone passages and the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge's Pacific Flyway wetlands on the return day. The itinerary is paced for people who prefer to arrive unhurried, linger over meals, and absorb landscape at a walking pace.

Logan Tabernacle
★ 4.8Completed in 1891 after 18 years of construction, the Logan Tabernacle is the finest example of pioneer ecclesiastical masonry in Utah — its rock-faced rusticated limestone exterior quarried from Green Canyon above the city and laid by immigrant craftsmen. The 900-seat interior retains its original pipe organ and curved gallery seating; free organ recitals are held Tuesday and Thursday mornings in summer, filling the building with the resonance its proportions were specifically designed to amplify. The tabernacle's exterior is as rewarding to walk around as to enter.

Logan Temple — Grounds Walk
★ 4.9The Logan Temple (1884) is three years older than the Salt Lake Temple and represents the most ambitious Gothic ecclesiastical limestone construction in pioneer Utah. The castellated towers and lancet windows rise above Logan's historic district; the temple grounds are open and the exterior walk is one of the most photogenic in northern Utah, particularly in the morning light that catches the east face of the tower.

Lunch
Aggie Ice Cream — Utah State University Creamery
★ 4.7USU's land-grant creamery has been producing small-batch ice cream from Cache Valley dairy milk since 1922. The Aggie Blue Mint and seasonal huckleberry flavors are the most requested; the creamery shop on campus sells directly from the dairy building with a butterfat content and freshness that commercial ice cream cannot match.

Crumb Brothers Artisan Bread — Logan
A Cache Valley institution for naturally leavened sourdough, whole-grain loaves, and the kind of bakery café lunch — open-faced sandwiches, seasonal soups, house-made pastries — that makes a morning in Logan feel like a morning in a much larger city. The bread is baked daily in a wood-fired deck oven from locally milled grains.

Gossner Foods Cheese Factory — Logan
★ 4.7Cache Valley's Swiss-style cheese factory has been producing aged Swiss, white cheddar, and Gruyère-style wheels from local Holstein dairy milk since 1966. The factory store sells fresh cheese curds — squeaky within hours of production — and the viewing window shows the copper vats, curd cutting, and rind-washing process in a working dairy factory that exports to over 40 countries.

American West Heritage Center — Wellsville
★ 4.6Six miles south of Logan in Wellsville, this 160-acre living history site interprets the Mountain Man, pioneer homestead, and turn-of-century farm periods through working demonstrations of blacksmithing, wool carding, butter churning, and pioneer crafts in a setting at the foot of the Wellsville Mountains.

Bear Lake — Morning Kayak
★ 4.8Bear Lake at 5,900 feet on the Utah-Idaho border maintains its Caribbean-turquoise color throughout the morning hours — the calcium carbonate particles suspended in the glacial water scatter blue wavelengths at a ratio that makes the lake the most intensely colored natural water body in the Rocky Mountain West. The lake is 20 miles long, 8 miles wide, and up to 209 feet deep; kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals are available at the marina from 7 AM in summer. Morning paddling on the Utah shore, before the afternoon powerboat traffic begins, is the quietest and most striking way to experience the lake's color.

Bear Lake State Park — Cisco Beach
★ 4.7Cisco Beach on the Utah shore offers swimming access to the lake's turquoise water and views across to the Bear River Mountains rising above Garden City. The lake is home to four endemic species found nowhere else on Earth — including the Bonneville cisco, a small fish that spawns in January ice-fishing season and supports a commercial fishery.

LaBeau's Drive-In — Garden City
★ 4.5The Bear Lake raspberry milkshake has been a Garden City tradition since the 1960s: thick milkshakes made with berries from the valley's commercial raspberry farms, whose volcanic soil and altitude produce fruit of unusual intensity. The milkshake culture is so established that arriving without one feels like missing the point of Bear Lake.

Rendezvous Beach — South Shore
Rendezvous Beach State Park on Bear Lake's south shore has sandy swimming beaches and the full panoramic view across the lake to the Bear River Mountains — the afternoon perspective on the lake from this angle produces the most intense blue coloration as the light angle shifts.

Afternoon
Bear Lake Raspberry Farm Stands — Garden City
The commercial raspberry farms of Bear Lake Valley sell directly from roadside stands in July and August; the berries are distinctively darker and more intensely flavored than commercial varieties from lower elevations, and the farm stand culture is one of the most genuinely local food experiences in northern Utah.

Bear Lake North Shore — Idaho Side
The Idaho shore of Bear Lake, accessed via US-89 north from Garden City, is quieter and less commercial than the Utah side, with undeveloped grassland and marsh habitat at the lake's northern edge. The white pelican colony that nests at the Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge on the Idaho shore is visible from the road in summer.

Minnetonka Cave — St. Charles, Idaho
★ 4.7Minnetonka Cave lies 10 miles up St. Charles Canyon from the tiny town of St. Charles, Idaho, in the Bear River Range above Bear Lake. The 9-room limestone cave maintains a constant 48°F and contains stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, cave coral, and flowstone formations that developed over hundreds of thousands of years as acidic groundwater dissolved the Madison limestone bedrock. Guided 90-minute tours pass through eight developed rooms on a 0.6-mile route; bring a jacket. The cave is open Memorial Day through Labor Day; advance tickets are recommended in summer.

★ 4.7On the return drive south toward Salt Lake City, the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge outside Brigham City encompasses 77,000 acres of freshwater marsh at the delta of the Bear River entering the Great Salt Lake — the largest freshwater marsh on the Pacific Flyway. Between September and November, millions of birds stage here: tundra swans, white pelicans, avocets, stilts, and 60+ raptor species. A 12-mile auto tour route loops through the marsh with bird identification panels; the spectacle in fall migration can include 4 million birds simultaneously.

Box Elder Tabernacle — Brigham City
★ 4.8Brigham City's 1890 tabernacle is one of the finest Victorian ecclesiastical buildings in northern Utah — a red-brick Romanesque structure with a prominent clock tower on Main Street in a downtown that preserves more intact 19th-century commercial buildings than almost any other northern Utah city. The Brigham City Museum-Gallery on Forest Street documents the town's cooperative economic history (the 1864 Box Elder Cooperative Institution was one of the earliest in Utah) and the peach-orchard agricultural heritage of Box Elder County.
