Russian River Resort Town & the Bohemian Highway to Dillon Beach

The 5,200-acre park adjacent to Armstrong Redwoods, accessed through the old-growth grove and ascending into Douglas fir and tan oak woodland above the Russian River's headwater tributaries. The Bullfrog Pond trail (4 miles) is a moderate option for those wanting a longer walk — the shorter Pond Farm loop (1 mile) is the more relaxed alternative. Far less visited than the adjacent Armstrong grove, Austin Creek preserves the geologically and ecologically more complex terrain — the east-facing slopes support rare manzanita and chaparral communities alongside the tan oak woodland.

A Guerneville breakfast-and-lunch institution operating since 2011 in a converted 1920s commercial building on Main Street — named for the river bottom lowlands surrounding the town. The biscuits (a James Beard Award nomination), the farm egg scrambles, and the seasonal jam and butter boards use local Sonoma County produce. The outdoor patio faces the Russian River road; the coffee program is serious.

Johnson's Beach, the river swimming area at the base of Guerneville's main street, has been the social center of the Russian River resort community since the 1920s — canoe and kayak rentals, picnic areas on the gravel bars, and the easy afternoon culture of a river town that built its identity around outdoor leisure. The Russian River runs clear and warm (65–70°F in summer) through this section; the surrounding redwood canopy provides shade that the Pacific coast beaches lack.

California's largest champagne-method sparkling wine producer, operating in Guerneville since 1882 in a converted redwood lumber mill complex — the brick buildings, the formal Victorian rose garden (200 varieties), and the functioning winery have been maintained in their original 19th-century configuration. The winery's brandy production began in the 1880s using surplus wine; the brandy stills are still operational. Free tours run daily through the summer.

A Guerneville restaurant in the 1922 Mission Revival inn building above town, serving California farm cuisine in a formal wood-paneled dining room that contrasts with the town's casual character. The menu changes seasonally; the kitchen sources from the surrounding Russian River Valley farms and the Bodega Bay fishing fleet. A more serious meal than the resort-town surroundings suggest.

An artisan wood-fired bakery in the hamlet of Freestone, open Fridays through Mondays only — the focaccia, whole-grain sourdoughs, and black-pepper-fennel sticky buns are baked in a 5-ton wood-fired oven built by the baker. The wait on weekend mornings can reach 45 minutes; the outdoor picnic tables in front of the old wood barn are worth the wait. The bakery sells out completely by early afternoon.

The Union Hotel in Occidental has served family-style Italian dinners since 1879 in a communal dining room tradition brought by the Italian immigrants who settled the Bohemian Highway corridor in the 1870s. The meal is fixed-price and family-style: minestrone soup, salad, pasta (ravioli, gnocchi, or rigatoni rotating by day), roasted chicken, and dessert — everything house-made. The dining room has not been renovated since the 1960s and the ritual has not changed since the 1940s.

A private beach community on Tomales Bay's outer coast, 8 miles north of Bodega Bay, where the landscape has barely changed since the 1950s — a cluster of beach cottages, a general store, and Lawson's Landing oyster shack serving oysters direct from their Tomales Bay grant leases. The cold-water beach faces west into the Pacific swell; the adjacent estuary mouth provides the sharpest contrast between open Pacific and protected bay of any point on the Sonoma-Marin coast. Lawson's Landing has operated its oyster lease continuously since 1956.

The casual beach restaurant at Dillon Beach serving fresh oysters from Lawson's Landing, fish tacos, and cold drinks in a setting that has not been renovated or repositioned in decades — the opposite of the gentrified fish houses further south. The afternoon light on the beach from the deck faces west across the Pacific opening, and the working oyster boats returning to the landing add movement to a very quiet stretch of coast.
