Okefenokee Immersion: Airboats, Canoes & Billy's Lake

The airboats skim across the blackwater prairie channels and open lakes at exhilarating speed, stopping in quiet backwater areas where guides explain the ecology of the cypress and the behavior of the alligators. This is an excellent first-day orientation that covers geographic ground and contextualizes what you will see more slowly the next day.

Inside the National Wildlife Refuge adjacent to the Swamp Park, the Chesser Island Homestead preserves the farmstead of the Chesser family, who homesteaded on the edge of the Okefenokee from the 1850s through the early 20th century. The hand-hewn log structures, cane grinding mill, and sugarcane kettle document the extraordinary self-sufficiency required to live at the edge of this wilderness, and the interpretive exhibits give a human dimension to the swamp's history that the wildlife-focused tours naturally omit.

At dawn, Billy's Lake at Stephen C. Foster State Park is an experience available almost nowhere else east of the Mississippi. The flat blackwater surface mirrors the cypress canopy above it; great blue herons stand motionless in the shallows; anhingas dive and surface in the middle distance. The alligators, which spent the night cruising the surface, begin to position themselves on exposed logs and mud banks as the sun rises, and within an hour of daylight the lake margins are lined with basking gators of every size. Paddling out from the dock into the mist of the early morning, with the trees rising 80 feet out of the black water and the day's first light filtering through the canopy, is one of the great quietly astonishing experiences in American nature.

The guided boat tour from Stephen C. Foster penetrates deeper into the refuge than the morning paddle, following the narrow blackwater channels through cypress cathedral into the open lily pad prairies that characterize the Okefenokee's interior. The guides are typically longtime swamp residents with encyclopedic knowledge of the individual alligators, the nesting sites of the sandhill cranes and herons, and the arcane ecology of the floating peat islands. Sandhill crane sightings are almost guaranteed from Foster; the birds nest in the open prairie and can be observed at close range from the boat in spring and early summer.

The Dugout Canal loop from Stephen C. Foster is one of the most intimate paddling experiences in the refuge — a narrow hand-dug channel, barely wider than a canoe, cut through floating peat islands in the 19th century by hunters and local residents navigating the swamp's interior. Paddling through it requires picking up the paddle and using it to push off the cypress knees that crowd the banks; alligators rest on the banks within arm's reach; the overhanging cypress closes the sky to a narrow strip of light. It is the definition of genuine wilderness paddling.
