Beaufort, Penn Center & the Hunting Island Lighthouse

Beaufort's antebellum townscape survived the Civil War because Union forces arrived and stayed: the Battle of Port Royal Sound in November 1861 was one of the largest naval engagements of the war's early months, and Federal troops occupied the town within days. The planter class fled overnight, leaving behind furnished houses, silver, and food on tables. What followed was the Port Royal Experiment — one of the first attempts in American history to provide land, education, and economic support to formerly enslaved people, conducted right here on the Sea Islands beginning in 1862. The houses that the planters abandoned became schools and hospitals; the enslaved people who remained became the subjects and often the agents of a remarkable social transformation. Walking the Old Point neighborhood today — past the Tidalholm house at 1 Laurens Street (1853, filmed as the opening house in The Big Chill and The Great Santini), the Lewis Reeve Sams House (1852), and the Secession House where the ordinance of secession was drafted — is to walk through a layered history of extraordinary ambition and extraordinary suffering.

The 1804 Federal-style Verdier House on Bay Street is the most thoroughly interpreted historic site in Beaufort, its restored interior rooms offering a window into the Sea Island cotton economy at its peak. The guided tours are substantive and historically grounded, covering not only the architectural splendor of the house but the enslaved labor that funded and built it and the dramatic reversals of fortune that occurred here during and after the Civil War.

The 1798 Beaufort Arsenal on Craven Street housed the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery and served as an armory through the Civil War and beyond. The building now houses the Beaufort History Museum, which interprets the town's layered history from pre-contact Yemassee and Guale settlements through the Spanish and English colonial periods, the Sea Island cotton boom, the Civil War occupation, Reconstruction, and the 20th century. The collection is particularly strong on the Port Royal Experiment period and the Gullah-Geechee cultural heritage of the surrounding Sea Islands.

Built on the site of former cotton warehouses and wharves, the Waterfront Park at the foot of Bay Street provides the most panoramic view of the Beaufort River estuary from town. The tidal river here is broad and island-dotted, fringed by the great expanses of Spartina grass marsh that define the Lowcountry landscape — a sea of gold in autumn, deep green through summer. Dolphins are frequently visible in the channel at dusk, and brown pelicans patrol the shallows year-round.

Penn Center was founded in April 1862 by Laura Towne and Ellen Murray, two white Philadelphia abolitionists who sailed south with the Port Royal Relief Committee to help formerly enslaved people on the Sea Islands — some of whom had never had contact with free people — transition to freedom and self-sufficiency. The school they established, first held in a plantation house, became one of the most important educational institutions in African American history. In its first decades Penn taught reading, writing, arithmetic, and trades; by the early 20th century it had expanded into a comprehensive institution offering teacher training, agricultural extension, and community health services. The school's Quaker and abolitionist founders believed in educational equality decades before most Americans thought it conceivable. In the early 1960s Penn Center took on a second life as a strategic retreat site for the civil rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. held planning sessions here in 1963 and 1964 with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, drawn to the remote island setting and the deep historical resonance of the location. Some of the tactical planning for the March on Washington in August 1963 took place here. The York W. Bailey Museum on the campus tells this full history with remarkable depth, and the surviving 1885 campus buildings — listed on the National Register of Historic Places — provide a tangible connection to the extraordinary people who built them.

The Hunting Island Lighthouse, completed in 1875, is the only publicly climbable lighthouse in South Carolina and one of the most historically interesting on the southeastern coast. Its 167 cast-iron spiral steps rise 132 feet to a lantern room with sweeping views across the Lowcountry: Atlantic Ocean to the east, the intricate maze of estuaries and tidal creeks to the west, and the maritime forest of Hunting Island State Park below. The lighthouse was designed to be dismantled and relocated — the entire cast-iron structure was moved 1.25 miles inland in 1889 as the beach eroded beneath the original site, a prescient engineering solution to coastal erosion that foreshadows the same problems facing barrier islands today. The adjacent keeper's cottage is preserved and open, offering insight into the isolated lives of the lighthouse keepers and their families who tended the light before it was automated.

Hunting Island's 5.5 miles of Atlantic beach are among the most undeveloped on the East Coast — no hotels, no beach chairs for rent, no restaurants on the strand. The barrier island's interior is a maritime forest of live oaks draped with Spanish moss, palmetto palms, pines, and wax myrtles, threaded by a freshwater lagoon that supports wading birds, otters, and alligators. A boardwalk crosses the lagoon between the lighthouse and the beach, passing through a transition zone between salt marsh and freshwater wetland of unusual ecological richness. The beach itself is a significant loggerhead sea turtle nesting site in summer.

The 4-mile Lagoon Trail circuits the freshwater lagoon through mature maritime forest, offering some of the best birding on the South Carolina coast: great blue herons, little blue herons, tricolored herons, snowy egrets, anhingas drying their wings in the live oak canopy, ospreys nesting in dead snags above the water, and in winter, ducks and mergansers on the lagoon itself. The trail is flat, well-shaded, and dramatically beautiful in morning and afternoon light when the long rays filter through the moss-hung oaks.
