Thundering Falls & Mountain Town Charm

The 5.6-mile round-trip trail climbs through Douglas fir and big-leaf maple forest before the falls sequence begins — small, middle (265 feet), and upper falls, each progressively wilder. The middle falls viewpoint is a granite ledge with full spray exposure. Boots recommended; the trail is well-maintained but steep in sections.

The only restaurant in the tiny town of Index, occupying a historic storefront adjacent to the granite walls of the Town Wall. Simple American food — burgers, sandwiches, daily soup — served to the climbing community and Highway 2 day-trippers. The porch faces the South Fork Skykomish River and the towering granite faces above town.

The tiny town of Index (population 160) sits beneath a 1,000-foot granite face that's one of the Pacific Northwest's premier trad climbing destinations. Non-climbers can walk the town's one-block main street and stare straight up at parties working Grade V multipitch routes. The Bush House Country Inn has been here since 1898.

An 1889 bar in Snohomish's preserved Victorian downtown, 15 minutes south of Monroe on the drive back to I-405. The kitchen serves pub classics — fish and chips, clam chowder, burgers — alongside local draft beers. Snohomish's First Street is one of the finest territorial-era commercial districts in western Washington, and the detour adds nothing to the commute home.
