🏛️ CulturalWeekend · from Seattle, WA

Bavarian Alps & Wild West Frontier

Washington's two most theatrically-themed towns sit on opposite ends of the Cascades and couldn't be more different. Leavenworth's Bavarian village succeeded by importing an entire European aesthetic to a dying logging town; Winthrop's Wild West boardwalks were built in 1972 and feel genuinely frontier. Between them, the Methow Valley offers a working eastern-Washington contrast.

Leavenworth Front Street
Leavenworth's Bavarian transformation began in 1964 when the town reinvented itself after the railroad rerouted and the sawmill closed. The result is a mile of Alpine-painted facades, working German bakeries, and an Oktoberfest that draws 10,000 visitors per weekend. The Pioneer Village and Enchantment Park behind the main strip show the pre-Bavarian bones of the original 1890s logging town.

Larch Handcrafted Pasta
4.7
Leavenworth's most acclaimed restaurant — house-made pasta in a small dining room steps from Front Street, serving the kind of refined Italian-American food that surprises people expecting only schnitzel. The ragu and carbonara are made to order with local Cascade ingredients; the wine list features Washington Sangiovese alongside Italian imports. The room is small; book ahead on summer weekends.

A greenway following the glacier-fed Icicle Creek west from town into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness — granite canyon walls close in progressively as you leave town behind. The first 3 miles are paved and accessible; the upper sections deliver increasingly dramatic Cascade scenery.

The best small museum in eastern Washington preserves the 1897 Guy Waring trading post — the first store in the Methow Valley — alongside a reconstructed homestead cabin, a 1920s schoolhouse, and a blacksmith shop. Waring's correspondence with Owen Wister, author of The Virginian, helped shape the Western novel as a genre.

Winthrop Boardwalk
The false-front Western buildings along Riverside Avenue were retrofitted in 1972 to give the town a coherent identity — and the aesthetic stuck. The main street now houses working shops, galleries, and outfitters within the Western facades; the Methow Arts building a block off the strip shows the town's serious creative community.

Winthrop's most beloved restaurant occupies a false-front Western building on the main boardwalk with a deck above the Methow River. The menu is Mexican-American fusion that works better than it sounds — fish tacos, house chili, local draft beers — and the deck at golden hour over the river is the Methow Valley's best dinner setting.
