Victorian Port & San Juan Gateway

Bellingham's south-end historic district occupies 12 blocks of original 1890s commercial brick along Bellingham Bay — bookshops, galleries, wine bars, and the Alaska Ferry terminal within walking distance. The Village Green hosts a farmers market; the Marine Drive waterfront path runs 2 miles along the bay.

Northwest seafood in a preserved 1890s building named for Fairhaven's disreputable founder — Dungeness crab, local oysters, house chowder, and a bar that dates to the building's original use as a saloon. The pressed-tin ceiling and maritime photography are original to the 1892 renovation.

The Lightcatcher building by Olson Kundig houses Whatcom Museum's rotating exhibitions in galleries lit by a 180-foot translucent wall that diffuses Pacific Northwest light without bleaching color from the work. The permanent holdings include significant Northwest Coast Indigenous basketry and major works by regional painters Morris Graves and Guy Anderson.

The 7th Street commercial corridor preserves Anacortes's 1890s identity as a rival to Seattle — a city platted to become the western terminus of the Great Northern Railway before the line went south instead. The resulting town has a gracious commercial district, the Islands Museum of Art, and Cap Sante Park's 360-degree harbor view that ranks among the best in the Salish Sea.

The promontory above Anacortes provides the finest unobstructed view of the San Juan Islands accessible without a ferry — a 360-degree panorama encompassing Fidalgo Bay, the Cascades, Guemes Island, and on clear days the Olympic Mountains to the southwest. The park's hilltop loop is 1.5 miles through madrona and Douglas fir.
