Bavarian Village, Glacier Lake & Frontier Town

A three-day arc through eastern Washington's most distinctive cultural landscapes: Leavenworth's improbably successful Bavarian reinvention, Lake Chelan's wine country anchored by a 55-mile glacial lake, and Winthrop's Wild West boardwalks in the Methow Valley. Each town transformed itself from resource-extraction economy to destination; each did it in a completely different way.

Leavenworth Front Street
A mile of Alpine-painted facades on a Cascade Mountain backdrop — the Bavarian transformation of 1964 preserved the town's 1890s building stock beneath new signage and murals, creating an unlikely but functional cultural hybrid. The Pioneer Village Museum behind the main street documents the logging era that preceded the reinvention.

The outdoor beer garden on Front Street is the most authentic element of Leavenworth's Bavarian identity — German brewing traditions, a proper Hefeweizen, and communal seating that generates the kind of afternoon conversation the European original is built around.

Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum
Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum
4.6
Seven thousand nutcrackers from 38 countries in a dedicated museum that is stranger and more compelling than it sounds — the craftsmanship of the 16th-century specimens is remarkable, and the collection traces the evolution of mechanical folk art from German workshops to Soviet mass production to contemporary artist commissions.

Leavenworth's best bar, with a properly Germanic interior of dark wood and antlers, an excellent Northwest craft and German import beer selection, and a kitchen that stays open later than the tourist-facing restaurants on Front Street.

At 55 miles long and 1,486 feet deep — the third deepest lake in North America — Chelan is a glacially-carved fjord in the semi-arid Okanogan Highlands. The downtown waterfront has boat launches, a ferry terminal to the remote town of Stehekin at the lake's upper end, and a walkable promenade fronting the water.

A lakeside winery 10 minutes west of downtown Chelan, with a tasting room terrace directly above the lake. The Riesling and Gewürztraminer are the house strengths; the estate Cab Franc shows what high-altitude eastern Washington can do with reds. Lunch available on the terrace.

The 1897 Guy Waring trading post — the first commercial establishment in the Methow Valley — preserved as the centerpiece of a heritage complex including a homestead cabin, schoolhouse, and blacksmith shop. Waring's correspondence with Owen Wister shaped the Western novel; the museum documents the valley's transition from fur trade to homesteading to tourism over 130 years.

The false-front Western commercial strip was retrofitted in 1972 and has since housed real businesses within the theatrical facades — working galleries, outfitters, and the Methow Arts building that represents the valley's serious creative community. Winthrop's most ambitious kitchen, in a wooden-beamed room on the Methow River, serving Pacific Northwest farm-to-table cuisine from the surrounding valley. The menu rotates with what Methow Valley farms produce — local lamb, fresh trout, foraged mushrooms, valley-grown vegetables. A more refined close to the day than the frontier-themed boardwalk restaurants one block away.
