Myakka River — The Canopy Walkway, the Airboat & Deep Hole
One of Florida's oldest and largest state parks, Myakka River sprawls across 58 square miles of wet prairie, oak-and-palm hammock, and slow black-water river a little over an hour south of Tampa. This two-day trip is built around its signature wildlife spectacle and its singular vantage points. Day one climbs the canopy walkway — the first public treetop boardwalk in North America — for a bird's-eye view over the hammock, then takes to the water on one of the park's big lake-going airboats and along the birding boardwalks where herons, storks, and alligators gather. Day two is the long walk to Deep Hole, a sinkhole in the river bend that draws one of the densest alligator concentrations in the state, followed by the park's backcountry trails before the return north. Nights are spent in the Sarasota-Venice area, minutes from the park gate.

Myakka Canopy Walkway & Tower
★ 4.7Myakka's canopy walkway was the first public treetop walkway in North America, a 25-foot-high suspension bridge strung between two towers through the upper story of an oak-and-palm hammock. From the swaying span you look out into the leaf canopy at eye level — a layer of the forest normally invisible from the ground, alive with warblers, hawks, and epiphytes. At the far end a 74-foot tower climbs above the treetops for a panorama across the whole mosaic of hammock, prairie, and the shining thread of the Myakka River. Go first thing, before the day heats up and the boardwalks fill, for the best light and the most bird movement.

★ 4.6The Birdwalk is a long boardwalk that reaches out over the shallow northern end of Upper Myakka Lake, delivering an open, unobstructed sweep across the water and its extraordinary bird life. Depending on the season and the water level, the flats fill with great blue herons, wood storks, roseate spoonbills, white pelicans, sandhill cranes, and rafts of ducks, with alligators hauled out along the shoreline. It is one of the best places in Florida to see marsh birds in numbers from a single fixed vantage, and the low railings and open sky make it a photographer's spot. Midday light is harsh, but the sheer concentration of birds makes the stop worthwhile any time of day.

The Pink Gator Café
The park's own concession near the boat basin, the Pink Gator serves an easygoing lunch of burgers, gator bites, fried fish, and cold drinks on a shaded deck by Upper Myakka Lake. It is convenient, unfussy, and positioned so you can eat between the morning boardwalks and the afternoon airboat with barely a detour. The lakeside tables put you within sight of basking alligators and wading birds, which is about as Florida as a lunch stop gets.

For the full-immersion option, the park itself rents rustic log cabins built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s on the shore of Upper Myakka Lake — book these far in advance, as they go quickly.

Deep Hole Trail
★ 4.9Deep Hole is a natural sinkhole roughly 130 feet deep in a bend of the Lower Myakka River, and the flats around it host one of the densest concentrations of alligators anywhere in Florida — scores of them hauled out on the banks at once, alongside crowds of wading birds and, in winter, migratory ducks. Access is limited to a small number of permits issued daily at the south entrance to protect the area, so arrive at opening to secure one. The hike out is a flat but sun-exposed 2.5 miles each way through wet prairie and scrub, best done early before the heat. Keep a very respectful distance from the water's edge; this is genuinely wild alligator habitat with no barriers.

★ 4.9For a final unhurried loop before turning north, the park's interior roads and the trails around Clay Gully lead through a shifting patchwork of pine flatwoods, prairie, and cypress-lined sloughs where the wildlife is quieter and the crowds thin to nothing. It is a fine stretch to slow the pace, watch for sandhill cranes stalking the prairie and hawks working the thermals overhead, and take one last long look at the Myakka landscape. From here the park's north exit puts you straight onto the route back toward Tampa.
