A two-day escape to Gasparilla Island, the genteel, time-slowed barrier island at the mouth of Charlotte Harbor where the small town of Boca Grande has kept its Gilded-Age charm and refused to hurry. Reached by a low causeway about two hours south of Tampa, the island is famous for three things: the historic 1890 village of banyan-shaded lanes and a restored railroad depot, the candy-striped Gasparilla Island Lighthouse guarding Boca Grande Pass, and the legendary tarpon fishing that has drawn presidents and anglers to these waters for over a century. Day one settles into the village and the lighthouse; day two is for the wide golden beaches, the causeway views, and the island's deep tarpon culture before the drive home. Historic Boca Grande Village & Railroad Depot
Boca Grande village is one of Florida's most gracefully preserved small towns — a grid of narrow lanes shaded by enormous banyan trees, lined with clapboard cottages, tin-roofed shops, and the golf carts that are the island's preferred transport. At its heart stands the restored 1910 Boca Grande depot, once the terminus of the railroad that shipped phosphate out of the deepwater pass; today it houses boutiques and a restaurant. Wander the shops of the historic district, admire the old Florida-Mediterranean architecture, and soak up the unhurried, moneyed-but-modest atmosphere that has kept the island feeling like a step back in time.

Set in the historic railroad depot in the center of the village, the Loose Caboose is a longtime Boca Grande favorite for a relaxed lunch — grouper sandwiches, key lime pie, and homemade ice cream in a bright, casual dining room with plenty of local character. Its location makes it the natural midday anchor between a morning in the village and an afternoon at the lighthouse. The island's few restaurants fill up in season, so an early or late lunch is the easygoing move.

The setting is superb: the lighthouse sits right on the sand where the pass meets the Gulf, with sweeping water views, good shelling, and often dolphins working the deep, swift channel. A short, level walk from the parking area makes it an easy afternoon visit.

The Gasparilla Inn area
The Gasparilla Inn & Club, a grand yellow-clapboard resort that has anchored the village since 1913, is the historic center of island life and has hosted presidents, industrialists, and Gilded-Age families for over a century. Even if you don't stay at the Inn itself, its area is the most atmospheric place to spend the night, within a short golf-cart ride of the village and the water. Boca Grande's lodging runs boutique and refined — historic inns, cottages, and vacation rentals rather than chain hotels — so book well ahead, especially in the winter and spring tarpon seasons. The public beach accesses along the west side offer easy morning swimming in the calm, shallow Gulf and some of the best shelling on Florida's southwest coast — the island's position at the mouth of Charlotte Harbor washes up whelks, conchs, olives, and the occasional sand dollar. Start early while the light is soft and the sand cool, and walk the tide line with the beach nearly to yourself before the day warms.

The nearby Boca Grande Bike Path, a paved trail down the island's old rail bed, is a pleasant way to see more of the island by rented cart or bike. It's a relaxed way to bridge the morning beach and lunch.

For a waterfront lunch steeped in the island's fishing heritage, the dockside restaurants at the marina serve fresh-caught Gulf seafood — grouper, shrimp, and stone crab in season — with boats coming and going and pelicans loitering at the pilings. It's a fitting place to absorb Boca Grande's tarpon-fishing soul over a plate of seafood before heading back toward Tampa. Sit outside on the deck if the weather cooperates and watch the charter boats return from the pass.

Boca Grande Pass & Tarpon Culture
★ 4.9Boca Grande Pass, the deep channel between Gasparilla and Cayo Costa, is famous worldwide as the 'Tarpon Fishing Capital of the World' — each spring and early summer, thousands of silver tarpon stack up in the pass to feed, and a century-old sport-fishing tradition draws anglers from around the globe. Even without a rod, the pass is a spectacle: charter boats work the current below the lighthouse, and dolphins and sharks patrol the deep water. Spend the late afternoon on the sand near the lighthouse watching the boats and the pass, or browse the village tackle shops and galleries whose art and lore are steeped in the tarpon mystique, before the drive back to Tampa.
