Tennessee River Shoreline & Town Creek Trail
The afternoon belongs to the water. The park's lakeside day-use area and the flat Town Creek shoreline trails hug the edge of the Tennessee River, where great blue herons, egrets, ospreys, and wintering waterfowl work the shallow coves. It is easy, level walking with near-constant open water views — the counterpoint to the morning's ridge climb. Anglers cast from the bank, and the coves fill with birdlife in the low afternoon light. A slow, camera-in-hand stroll is the right speed here.

Sunset from the Lodge Terrace
★ 4.3Climb back up to the lodge bluff for the last of the light, when the sun drops over the far shore and the lake turns to hammered copper. It is the finest sunset perch in the park and a fitting close before the drive south — a final scan of the water for a late-flying eagle. Grab a drink on the terrace if the lodge lounge is open. Then it is a clear ninety minutes back to Birmingham.
