Oak Mountain State Park: Waterfalls & Lake

Oak Mountain State Park 30 minutes south of Birmingham is Alabama's largest state park at nearly 10,000 acres — big enough to feel genuinely remote while remaining close to the city, and varied enough to fill a full day at a relaxed pace. Peavine Falls, the park's signature waterfall, sits at the end of a two-mile round-trip trail through second-growth hardwood forest and drops 65 feet into a sandstone plunge pool. Double Oak Lake in the park's center is the afternoon destination: a quiet reservoir with a beach, canoe and paddleboat rentals, and a fishing pier that sees a fraction of the weekend crowds that comparable lakes closer to Birmingham attract. The combination of a morning waterfall walk and an afternoon on the lake is the right unhurried use of Oak Mountain without requiring an early start or a strenuous pace.

4.7
A two-mile round-trip trail through second-growth hardwood forest to a 65-foot waterfall dropping into a sandstone plunge pool — the most dramatic natural feature in the Birmingham metro area and the park's signature destination. The trail runs along Peavine Creek through a narrow hollow with the sound of water throughout; the falls are the widest and most consistent flow in the park. An easy pace takes about an hour and a half.

A well-maintained picnic area near the park center with pavilions, grills, and tables under a mature hardwood canopy — the right midday stop between the morning waterfall hike and the afternoon lake time. The park store near the trailhead has limited supplies; bring lunch from Birmingham.

A quiet reservoir in the center of the park with a sand beach, designated swimming area, canoe and paddleboat rentals, and a fishing pier — the park's main summer gathering place, but considerably calmer than public lakes closer to Birmingham. The surrounding oak and hickory ridges are visible from the water. Afternoons on weekdays are peaceful.
