A short drive southeast of Buffalo, the village of East Aurora is the improbable birthplace of one of America's great design revolutions. Here in 1895 the writer and provocateur Elbert Hubbard founded the Roycroft — a community of printers, bookbinders, metalsmiths, and furniture makers that became the beating heart of the American Arts & Crafts movement, a rebellion against mass-produced Victorian clutter in favor of honest materials and handwork. This one-day journey wanders the fourteen-building Roycroft Campus National Historic Landmark, pays a call at the boyhood home of President Millard Fillmore, browses the wonderfully unchanged aisles of Vidler's 5 & 10, and lets the children loose at the Explore & More museum. It is a day steeped in the ideals of craft, character, and small-town Americana.

The Roycroft Campus

Founded by Elbert Hubbard in 1895 as a printing shop, it grew into a self-contained artisan colony of some 500 craftspeople producing books, hammered copper, tooled leather, and Mission-style furniture. Begin at the Roycroft Powerhouse visitor center, then wander the campus green past the Chapel, the Print Shop, and the Copper Shop, where the Roycroft mark — an orbicular cross and 'R' — is still stamped on work made by contemporary artisans. Guided walking tours trace Hubbard's philosophy of the union of head, heart, and hand, and his dramatic death aboard the Lusitania in 1915.

The Roycroft Inn
Built in 1905 to house the pilgrims who flocked to hear Elbert Hubbard lecture, the Roycroft Inn is a living museum of Arts & Crafts design and the natural place for lunch on the campus. The dining rooms are furnished with original Roycroft oak and lit by hand-wrought copper fixtures, and the walls carry Hubbard's aphorisms in the distinctive Roycroft lettering. The kitchen serves an updated American menu — seasonal soups, sandwiches, and regional plates — in a National Historic Landmark setting. Sit in the peristyle overlooking the campus green if the weather cooperates.

Millard Fillmore House Museum

Restored by the Aurora Historical Society and furnished with period pieces and Fillmore family artifacts, it offers an intimate look at the domestic life of an ordinary man who rose to the highest office in the land. Vidler's 5 & 10
★ 4.7A genuine five-and-dime that has been in continuous family operation since 1930, Vidler's is a beloved institution sprawling across four connected Main Street storefronts with creaking wooden floors and a giant animated 'Vidler' figure waving from the roofline. Inside is a joyfully overwhelming maze of penny candy, cast-iron cookware, old-fashioned toys, sewing notions, and ten thousand small useful things the internet forgot. It is at once a working store and a museum of American retail, and the descent into the basement level — packed floor to ceiling — is a rite of passage.
