Seneca Oil Spring
★ 4.1A short drive from Cuba lies one of the most quietly significant sites in the industrial history of the Americas: the Seneca Oil Spring, a natural petroleum seep on the Oil Spring Reservation of the Seneca Nation. It was here in 1627 that the French missionary Joseph de La Roche Daillon recorded the earliest known European account of oil in North America — a full 232 years before the famous Drake well in Pennsylvania. The Seneca had long gathered the oil from this spring for medicine and trade. Today a modest interpretive marker and the seep itself sit in a peaceful, wooded setting, an unassuming birthplace for a world-changing commodity.
