George Eastman Museum

★ 4.7This brick rowhouse on Madison Street was the home of Susan B. Anthony for the last forty years of her life and the command center of the American women's suffrage movement. It was here, in the front parlor, that Anthony was arrested in 1872 for the crime of voting in the presidential election — a case she used to put the injustice of women's disenfranchisement on trial before the nation. The house is preserved much as she left it, filled with her furnishings, her writing desk, and the artifacts of a half-century of activism, with knowledgeable docents connecting her work to the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. It is one of the most consequential small houses in American history.
