Erie Canal at Lockport — The Flight of Five, the Cave & the Towpath

Forty minutes northeast of Buffalo, the little city of Lockport exists because of a single, astonishing feat of nineteenth-century engineering: to lift the Erie Canal over the sixty-foot Niagara Escarpment, the builders cut a staircase of five double locks into solid rock, the celebrated Flight of Five that gave the town its name. This is a day spent at the intersection of industry and nature — riding a boat through a blasted-out underground tunnel by lantern light, standing beside the restored 1838 stone locks as the water thunders down, and walking the old towpath where mules once hauled barges toward Buffalo. It is compact, walkable, and genuinely singular; there is nothing else quite like the Lockport locks anywhere on the canal. Silver Lake & the Gaslit Village of Wyoming

A quiet day trip southeast of Buffalo into the rolling farm country of the Genesee Valley, built around a small glacial lake and one of the most perfectly preserved 19th-century villages in New York. Silver Lake is a placid two-mile ribbon of water ringed by cottages and a state park with a swimming beach — the kind of unhurried lakeshore where the loudest sound is a screen door. The nearby village of Wyoming, a National Historic District, still lights its Main Street with gas lamps at dusk, and its cobblestone and Greek Revival buildings look much as they did in the 1870s. The day closes at the Beaver Meadow Audubon Center, a hushed preserve of ponds, marsh, and hardwood forest laced with quiet boardwalk trails — a gentle nature walk to wind down before the drive home.

East Aurora — The Roycroft Campus & the American Arts & Crafts Movement

A short drive southeast of Buffalo, the village of East Aurora is the improbable birthplace of one of America's great design revolutions. Here in 1895 the writer and provocateur Elbert Hubbard founded the Roycroft — a community of printers, bookbinders, metalsmiths, and furniture makers that became the beating heart of the American Arts & Crafts movement, a rebellion against mass-produced Victorian clutter in favor of honest materials and handwork. This one-day journey wanders the fourteen-building Roycroft Campus National Historic Landmark, pays a call at the boyhood home of President Millard Fillmore, browses the wonderfully unchanged aisles of Vidler's 5 & 10, and lets the children loose at the Explore & More museum. It is a day steeped in the ideals of craft, character, and small-town Americana.
