Kirtland & the Chagrin Valley — Canopy Walks, Farm Fields & a Waterfall Village

A gentle day just east of Cleveland trading the lakefront for the wooded ridges and river valleys of Lake and Geauga counties. The morning is spent among the trees at the Holden Arboretum, one of the largest arboreta in the country, where the Kalberer Emergent Tower and the Murch Canopy Walk lift you a hundred feet into the forest crown. Midday drops down to Lake Farmpark, a working farm and living museum where the land itself is the exhibit. The afternoon settles into historic Chagrin Falls, a picture-book village built around the tumbling falls of the Chagrin River, with a popcorn shop hanging over the water and a main street made for slow wandering. It is an easy, restorative loop — no hard hikes, no crowds, just canopy, pasture, and the sound of falling water.

Spread across 3,600 acres of forest, meadow, and display gardens in Kirtland, the Holden Arboretum is one of the largest arboreta and botanical gardens in the United States. Its signature pairing is the Judith and Maynard H. Murch IV Canopy Walk, a suspended boardwalk that carries visitors 65 feet up into the treetops, and the adjacent Kalberer Emergent Tower, a 120-foot spiral that climbs above the forest crown for long views across the Cuyahoga watershed toward Lake Erie. Below, gentle paved and gravel paths loop past the rhododendron gardens, Corning Lake, and stands of old maple and beech that blaze in autumn. It is an unhurried, mostly level morning of walking among the trees rather than up any mountain. Arrive near opening to have the canopy walkway quiet and the light low through the leaves.

A short drive from Holden, Lake Farmpark is a working farm and agricultural science center run by Lake Metroparks, where the everyday life of a Northeast Ohio farm becomes the attraction. Draft horses, dairy cows, sheep, and heritage poultry share 235 acres of pasture and woodlot with a great barn, a hayloft, and demonstration plots that change with the season — maple sugaring in late winter, planting in spring, harvest in fall. Wagon rides trundle out across the fields, and the pace is deliberately slow and hands-on, aimed as much at quiet adults as at children. It is the pastoral middle of the day: a plate of countryside between the forest canopy and the river village.

Chagrin Falls is one of the most photographed villages in Ohio, a 19th-century mill town wrapped around the double waterfall that gives it its name. A viewing platform and staircase lead right down to the base of the falls, where the Chagrin River drops over a limestone shelf in the middle of downtown, and the beloved Popcorn Shop leans out over the water beside it — the roar of the cascade audible from the sidewalk cafes. The compact main street is made for strolling, lined with independent bookshops, galleries, boutiques, and ice-cream counters, and the whole place has the unhurried, well-kept feel of a town that has been drawing weekend wanderers for generations. Give it a couple of hours; the pleasure is in ambling, not ticking off sights.

M Italian, Chagrin Falls
An early dinner in the village caps the day before the short drive back to Cleveland. M Italian is a warm, well-regarded trattoria a block from the falls, turning out wood-fired pizzas, house pastas, and seasonal Northern Italian plates in a bright, casual room. It suits the relaxed tone of the trip — no reservations-required formality, just good food a short walk from the water. The main street has plenty of alternatives if you would rather browse the menus in person.
