Lanterman's Mill & Covered Bridge

The restored 1845 grist mill is the emblem of Mill Creek Park, its great wooden waterwheel turning above a broad sandstone waterfall on Mill Creek. Inside, the original milling machinery still grinds corn and buckwheat into flour, and the three floors of exhibits trace the valley's early industrial history. Just downstream, the picturesque covered bridge frames the classic view of the mill and falls together — the most photographed scene in the park. Arrive early to have the mill and the falls overlook largely to yourself, and walk the short riverside paths that connect the two. It is the perfect orienting first stop before descending into the gorge.

Mill Creek Gorge Trail & Suspension Bridge

The heart of the park is its gorge — a shaded canyon of Sharon conglomerate sandstone where Mill Creek tumbles between hemlock-cloaked cliffs and moss-covered boulders. The Gorge Trail follows the creek beneath the towering rock walls, passing Lanterman's Falls and crossing the historic 1895 suspension bridge that sways gently above the water. Side paths climb to overlooks among the rock outcrops, and the whole route feels far wilder than its proximity to downtown Youngstown would suggest. The trail is well-maintained but has rooty, rocky sections and some elevation change — grippy shoes are worth having. Allow a couple of unhurried hours to take in the full gorge.

Lake Newport & the Rock Garden

The upper end of the park opens onto Lake Newport, a long reflecting lake ringed by wooded trail and threaded by the celebrated stone-arch bridges and lily ponds. Nearby, the Rock Garden is a natural amphitheater of massive tumbled sandstone blocks laced with footpaths and stone steps — a fun, easy scramble for all ages and one of the park's quieter highlights. Paved and gravel paths circle the water for gentle walking, and the afternoon light across the lake and the wooded slopes is superb. It is the perfect low-key counterpoint to the morning's gorge.
