The night is spent at Punderson Manor Lodge, the 1920s Tudor mansion that presides over the lake — a genuinely unusual place to stay, with guest rooms in the historic house, standalone cabins scattered through the woods, and a long local reputation for being pleasantly haunted. Evenings gather around the great stone fireplace in the timbered common room, and the porches and lawns look straight out over the water to catch the sunset. Book the manor rooms directly for the full effect; the park cabins are the quieter, family-friendly alternative. There is little else nearby, which is the point — dinner in the lodge dining room and an early, unplugged night.

The pace is deliberately old-fashioned; slow down for buggies, and remember that out of respect most families prefer not to be photographed. Note that nearly everything Amish-owned closes on Sundays, so time this leg for a weekday or Saturday.

A Geauga County institution just outside Middlefield, Mary Yoder's serves hearty, home-style Amish country cooking — broasted chicken, roast beef, egg noodles, homemade breads, and a pie case that is the real reason to save room. The dining room is plain and generous, the portions large, and the bakery counter sends people home with loaves and pies for the road. It is exactly the kind of unfussy, from-scratch farm-country meal the region is known for. Like most Amish-owned businesses it is closed on Sundays.

Century Village & the Burton Log Cabin Sugarhouse
