Mill Creek Park — Lanterman's Mill, the Gorge & Lake Newport

A single day tracing America's first metropolitan park system, an hour southeast of Cleveland in the Mahoning Valley. Established in 1891, Mill Creek MetroPark predates the National Park Service and remains one of the most beautiful urban wildernesses in the country — a deep sandstone gorge threaded by suspension bridges and stone-arch spans, a working 1845 grist mill turning above a waterfall, and a chain of lakes reflecting the wooded hills of Youngstown. The morning belongs to Lanterman's Mill and the covered bridge above the falls; midday drops into the gorge for the park's signature trails past Lanterman's Falls and the towering rock outcrops; the afternoon opens onto Lake Newport and Lake Glacier for lakeside walking and the rock-garden formations, before an early-evening return to Cleveland. It is a full day of easy-to-moderate walking on well-built park trails, with a genuine sense of stepping back into the Gilded Age vision of nature preserved inside a city.

Kirtland & the Chagrin Valley — Canopy Walks, Farm Fields & a Waterfall Village

A gentle day just east of Cleveland trading the lakefront for the wooded ridges and river valleys of Lake and Geauga counties. The morning is spent among the trees at the Holden Arboretum, one of the largest arboreta in the country, where the Kalberer Emergent Tower and the Murch Canopy Walk lift you a hundred feet into the forest crown. Midday drops down to Lake Farmpark, a working farm and living museum where the land itself is the exhibit. The afternoon settles into historic Chagrin Falls, a picture-book village built around the tumbling falls of the Chagrin River, with a popcorn shop hanging over the water and a main street made for slow wandering. It is an easy, restorative loop — no hard hikes, no crowds, just canopy, pasture, and the sound of falling water.

Canton — The Pro Football Hall of Fame & McKinley's City

An easy hour south of Cleveland, Canton punches far above its size in American cultural history. This is the birthplace of the National Football League, founded in a Hupmobile auto showroom here in 1920, and the enshrinement home of the sport's greatest names at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It is also the adopted city of William McKinley, the twenty-fifth president, who ran his famous front-porch campaign from a Canton home and is entombed here beneath a soaring granite dome. A single day threads football's national shrine, McKinley's monument and museum, and the National First Ladies' Historic Site — the only site in the country devoted to the women of the White House — with a hearty Canton lunch in between.
