Indian Peaks Wilderness: Brainard Lake Alpine Circuit
The Brainard Lake Recreation Area in the Indian Peaks Wilderness gives access to one of the most spectacular alpine lake circuits in Colorado — Mitchell Lake, Blue Lake, and Long Lake all within a 4-mile network at 10,500–11,000 feet. The tundra and willows are above treeline, the lakes are clear and deep, and the peaks of the Indian Peaks — Navajo Peak (13,409 ft), Apache Peak (13,441 ft) — form the backdrop. 45 minutes closer to Denver than Rocky Mountain National Park with comparable scenery and far fewer crowds.

Mitchell Lake & Blue Lake Trail
★ 4.9The Mitchell Lake trailhead at 10,480 feet accesses two lakes in a 4-mile round trip with 600 feet of gain. Mitchell Lake (1.2 miles) sits in an open glacial basin surrounded by tundra and patches of krummholz spruce. Blue Lake (2 miles) is deeper in the cirque at 11,300 feet with Apache and Navajo peaks directly overhead — the clearest alpine water in the Indian Peaks. Stay on trail: this is federally designated Wilderness and the fragile tundra takes centuries to recover from boot damage.

Long Lake & Pawnee Pass Trail
★ 4.8Long Lake Loop (2.6 miles flat around the lakeshore at 10,500 ft) is the easier companion to the Mitchell circuit — the Indian Peaks reflections in calm morning water are some of the best mountain photography in the Front Range. The Pawnee Pass Trail continues from the lake's west end 3.7 miles to Pawnee Pass at 12,541 feet (strenuous, Class 2) — a popular route used by backpackers crossing to Brainard. The lake itself is usually calm until afternoon winds pick up.

Salto Coffee Works — Nederland
★ 4.6Nederland sits at 8,228 feet at the junction of Boulder Canyon and the Peak-to-Peak Highway — a counterculture mountain town with genuine independent coffee shops. Salto Coffee Works is a roaster-cafe with exceptional espresso and a pastry case worth the stop. Nederland is also the location of the annual Frozen Dead Guy Days festival (celebrating the cryogenically frozen Norwegian in a local shed), which tells you everything about the town's character.
