Maroon Bells, Castle Peak & Aspen High Routes

The Maroon Bells — Maroon Peak (14,156 ft) and North Maroon Peak (14,014 ft) — are the most photographed mountains in North America and the centerpiece of the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. The Maroon Lake Scenic Trail (1.5-mile loop around the lake at 9,580 ft) gives the classic reflected-peaks view with minimal effort. The mandatory shuttle from Aspen Highlands (mid-June through October) controls vehicle access; arrive at the shuttle station by 8am on weekdays to avoid waits. More ambitious hikers can continue to Crater Lake (3.6 miles RT from the lake) for views into the cirque below the peaks.

The Hunter Creek Trail begins 1 mile from Aspen's Main Street and climbs 1,300 feet over 3 miles through aspen groves and meadows to the Hunter-Frying Pan Wilderness boundary. The lower 2 miles along Hunter Creek itself are flat and forested — the sound of the creek and the aspen canopy make this Aspen's best local trail for the first evening. Hunter Creek Valley is a wildlife corridor; mule deer and occasional black bear are regularly seen from the trail.

The West Maroon Trail from Maroon Lake climbs 7 miles to West Maroon Pass at 12,500 feet — a demanding day hike (2,900 ft gain) through a glacial valley between the Maroon Bells and Belleview Mountain. The trail passes Crater Lake at 2.5 miles (a natural stopping point for a moderate day), then enters the high-alpine tundra zone above 11,500 feet. The view back to Maroon Lake from the upper valley is one of the best in the Rockies. Turn around at Crater Lake if weather develops; the pass is fully exposed.

Crater Lake at 10,076 feet in the valley between the Maroon Bells — a glacially carved lake beneath Pyramid Peak (14,018 ft) and the Bell Chord couloir. The lake's south shore is a popular lunch spot with views back toward the Maroon Bells and the valley descended to get here. American pikas inhabit the boulder fields above the lake; their distinctive 'eep' call is a reliable background sound on any Maroon Bells day.

The Wheeler Opera House (1889 Romanesque Revival, still operating as a concert venue) and the Hotel Jerome (1889, oldest continuously operating hotel in Colorado) are the anchors of Aspen's historic pedestrian mall. The 1-mile walking loop on the mall takes 45 minutes; the Aspen Art Museum (2014, Shigeru Ban building) is one block north. Both the Wheeler and the Jerome survived the post-silver-crash decades when Aspen's population fell from 12,000 to 700 — their preservation is why Aspen's Victorian streetscape still coheres.

Snowmass Village sits 9 miles from Aspen at 8,200 feet — in summer, the ski mountain's gondola to Elk Camp (10,400 ft) runs for hikers and mountain bikers, with a trail network spanning 55 miles of high-alpine terrain. The Elk Camp Meadow trail system (moderate, 3–5 miles) gives panoramic views of the Elk Mountains without the crowds of the Maroon Bells. The Breathtaker Alpine Coaster runs from Elk Camp in summer as well.

End the Elk Mountains section with the world's largest outdoor mineral hot springs pool — 3.5 million gallons per day from the 122°F Yampah Spring, cooled to 90°F in the main pool. After three days of high-altitude hiking, the mineral water immersion (rich in sodium, calcium, sulfate, and bicarbonate) provides genuine muscle recovery. The 1888-era pool sits on the Colorado River bank 2.5 hours from Denver.
