Steamboat Springs: Hot Springs Town & Yampa River

A full-service aquatic center on the Yampa River bank in downtown Steamboat — fed by the Sulphur Springs at 104°F, with eight pools ranging from 98° to 104°F, two waterslides, and a fitness center. The springs have been used since 1887 when Dr. Harrington developed them commercially. Old Town Hot Springs is the locals' choice over the resort pool on the mountain; the facilities are excellent and the downtown location means easy walking to restaurants.

The Yampa River Botanic Park (700 Yampa Ave) is a free 3-acre garden along the river with over 1,000 plant species in themed beds — alpine, wetland, and high desert plantings. The downtown Steamboat commercial district on Lincoln Avenue is authentically Western: feed stores alongside boutiques, working ranch trucks alongside ski equipment dealers. The F.M. Light & Sons western wear store (operating since 1905) is the cultural anchor of the commercial strip.

A natural hot springs resort 7 miles above Steamboat Springs via a dirt road — pools carved from creek stone fed by a 147°F spring cooling naturally in the Strawberry Creek canyon. The main pool runs 101-104°F; a cooler pool uses the creek itself for contrast bathing. The setting is genuinely wild — forested canyon, no concrete, no music, strict no-photography policy in the evening. Adult-only after dark (Fridays and Saturdays); reservations required. The rustic cabins on-site are the most atmospheric lodging option in the Steamboat area.

A 283-foot waterfall 4 miles from downtown Steamboat — the lower falls are a 0.5-mile walk from the trailhead on a paved path; the upper falls (2.5 miles, 600 ft gain) are accessed via the Fish Creek Falls Trail through aspen groves. The lower falls view is one of the most dramatic close-approach waterfall views in Colorado — the falls hit the canyon floor 10 feet from the viewing platform. In spring runoff (May-June), the spray is intense and the volume is extraordinary.

A Steamboat Springs institution since 1994 on 7th Street — a brewpub with Colorado craft beers and a menu heavy on local beef, game, and vegetables. The outdoor deck above the Yampa River is the best lunch setting in Steamboat. The Mahogany Red and the Dark Horse Stout are year-round; seasonal specials rotate with the agricultural calendar.
