Buena Vista, Salida & Arkansas River Hot Springs

The Collegiate Peaks — Harvard (14,421 ft), Columbia (14,073 ft), Yale (14,196 ft), Oxford (14,160 ft), and Princeton (14,197 ft) — form the most concentrated cluster of 14,000-foot peaks in the continental United States, visible from a series of overlooks along US-24 above Buena Vista. The Harvard-Columbia viewpoint (5 miles north of Buena Vista on US-24) gives the full panorama of all five peaks above the Arkansas River valley floor. At 8,000 feet in the valley, the altitude is manageable; the peaks rise 6,000 feet above your vantage point.

Buena Vista's Main Street preserves a genuine 1880s-1910s Colorado mountain town commercial character — a compact walkable district with the Buena Vista Heritage Museum (covering the town's railroad and mining history), independent galleries, and the outdoor equipment shops that reflect the area's rafting culture. The Arkansas River is the most commercially rafted river in North America; the Browns Canyon National Monument section runs directly below the town.

A Buena Vista brewpub in a converted 1930s building on East Main — the Curbside Sour (kettle sour), Dunkel, and the Colorado Kölsch are year-round; the seasonal rotation emphasizes local agricultural ingredients. The deck overlooks the Collegiate Peaks and is the social center of Buena Vista's downtown. The kitchen serves elevated bar food with local sourcing — green chile pork belly tacos, Colorado beef burgers.

Natural geothermal springs at the base of Mount Princeton (14,197 ft) — three outdoor pools and a creek-side 'natural rock pools' area where the hot spring water mixes with Chalk Creek's cold snowmelt. The creek pools (free-form rock-lined channels along the creek bank) are the most unusual feature: water temperatures vary by position from 85°F near the cold-water input to 105°F at the spring source, and the setting — open sky, 14er backdrop, rushing creek — is genuinely stunning. Resort guests have full access; day-use passes available.

The 1887 steamplant on the Arkansas River that powered Salida's electric grid has been converted into an event center and gallery — the original steam boilers and turbine equipment are preserved in the main hall as sculptural installations. The Arkansas Riverwalk through downtown Salida (0.8 miles paved along the river) connects the steamplant to the F Street historic commercial district.

Salida claims the highest density of art galleries per capita of any city in Colorado — the F Street corridor and surrounding blocks hold 20+ working studios and galleries in historic 1880s-1900s brick buildings. The First Friday Art Walk (year-round) is Salida's main cultural event, but the galleries are open daily. The Salida Museum (130 W. 1st St) covers the railroad history of this one-time division point on the Denver & Rio Grande.

Salida's most-loved restaurant — wood-fired pizzas and house-brewed beers in a 1902 commercial building on F Street. The green chile pizza and the rotating seasonal beer (often incorporating local fruits or grains) have earned Amicas a reputation across the Arkansas River valley. The patio faces the Sangre de Cristo Range to the east.

A clothing-optional geothermal resort 5 miles west of Buena Vista on Cottonwood Creek — more rustic than Mount Princeton, with four outdoor pools ranging from 96°F to 106°F and a cold plunge directly from the creek. The setting is forest-enclosed and genuinely private; the resort emphasizes the wellness culture rather than resort amenities. The overnight cabins and camping options allow an unhurried multi-pool session without driving back to town.

Designated in 2015, Browns Canyon National Monument protects 21,586 acres of the Upper Arkansas River corridor — the most commercially rafted river stretch in North America (Class III-IV) and a wilderness canyon of Precambrian granite and pegmatite. The non-rafting access is via the Arkansas Hills Trail (4.6 miles, 1,100 ft gain from the Hecla Junction trailhead) with canyon rim views and bighorn sheep habitat. The monument protects a critical raptor corridor; golden eagles and prairie falcons are reliably seen from the rim trails in spring and fall.

The Browns Canyon section (Class III-IV) is the most commercially rafted river in North America — outfitters in Buena Vista and Salida (Arkansas Valley Adventures, Dvorak Expeditions, River Runners) run half-day trips (3 hours on water, moderate fitness required) and full-day Browns Canyon wilderness trips. For a relaxed trip, the Buena Vista Whitewater Park in town has flat-water sections for tubing and casual paddling without the Class III-IV commitment.

A mountain cafe in a Victorian building in Salida (20 minutes south of Buena Vista) serving sandwiches, burritos, and coffee — 5 minutes from Salida's Arkansas River access. Bongo Billy's has been the consistent breakfast and lunch anchor for Arkansas River valley visitors and locals since the 1990s; the outdoor seating faces the Sangre de Cristo Range to the east.

The first Colorado mountain craft distillery (founded 2011 in Buena Vista) serves cocktails in their tasting room on Main Street — the Amaro Montagna (house-made alpine amaro) and the Colorado Single Malt Whiskey are the signatures. A final taste of the Arkansas River valley before the 2-hour drive back to Denver.
