Estes Park, Hot Sulphur Springs & Grand Lake

Arrive in Estes Park (7,522 ft, 25 miles from RMNP's Fall River entrance) in time for the Stanley Hotel's morning tour — the 1909 Georgian Revival hotel above the Estes Valley covers F.O. Stanley's history (Stanley Steamer automobiles, tuberculosis recovery, the hotel's construction above the valley floor), Stephen King's 1974 stay, and the ghost lore that has made the hotel one of the most recognized in America. The front porch's view toward Longs Peak (14,259 ft) is the best mountain vista accessible without a car in Estes Park.

The Fall River Riverwalk through downtown Estes Park is flat, pleasant, and lined with the independent shops and galleries that make up Estes Park's commercial character. The river itself is a small mountain stream except in spring runoff (May-June) when it runs full and green. The Estes Park Visitors Center meadow (0.5 miles from downtown) has the reliable elk viewing — the herd of 200+ elk uses the meadow year-round and the early afternoon is a reliable sighting window.

Lily Lake at 8,927 feet (4 miles south of Estes Park on CO-7) is an easy 0.8-mile flat loop with the most photographed view of Longs Peak (14,259 ft) — the mountain's east face reflected in the lake in calm mornings. The parking area is accessible without a RMNP permit; the lake is within the park boundary but the loop trail itself doesn't require timed entry. Longs Peak's summit is visible from here; the standard Keyhole Route (15 miles RT, 5,100 ft gain, Class 3) begins 9 miles south at the Longs Peak Trailhead.

Trail Ridge Road (US-34) crosses Rocky Mountain National Park from Estes Park to Grand Lake, climbing to 12,183 feet at its highest point — 11 miles above treeline, the longest continuous stretch of high-altitude driving in the United States. The Alpine Visitor Center at Fall River Pass (11,796 ft) has exhibits on alpine tundra ecology; the Tundra Communities Trail (0.5-mile loop) walks through vegetation that grows 4 inches tall and takes a century to recover from foot damage. The drive from Estes Park to Grand Lake is 48 miles; allow 2 hours without stops, 3+ with the tundra walks.

Grand Lake (at 8,367 feet, the largest natural lake in Colorado) is the western gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park — a quieter and less crowded access point than Estes Park. The lakefront village has a wooden boardwalk commercial strip with galleries, restaurants, and the Grand Lake Lodge (1920) above the lake with the Never Summer Range and the Continental Divide peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park visible across the valley. The lake itself is popular for sailing and stand-up paddleboarding.

The flat Kawuneeche Valley (the Colorado River's headwaters at 8,700 feet) runs south from Grand Lake for 10 miles within RMNP — a broad willow meadow valley frequented by moose, elk, and the occasional black bear. The flat Colorado River Trail along the valley bottom is fully accessible and gives the best moose viewing in the park system. Shadow Mountain Reservoir (adjacent to Grand Lake) has a 4-mile flat loop around the lake perimeter.

Hot Sulphur Springs has been operating as a commercial resort since 1864 — the oldest continuously operating resort in Colorado. The springs emerge at 125°F from the canyon wall above the Colorado River; 21 pools on the hillside are gravity-fed at temperatures from 95°F to 112°F with cold plunges available. The resort's setting (canyon walls on three sides, Colorado River below) is dramatically different from the flat-pool resort experience. William Byers, founder of the Rocky Mountain News, promoted the springs in the 1860s and built the first hotel on the site.

The town of Hot Sulphur Springs (county seat of Grand County) has a compact Victorian-era commercial district with the Grand County Historical Museum documenting the Ute encampments at the springs and the railroad's 1905 arrival. The Moffat Road (now the California Zephyr route) passed through here on David Moffat's transcontinental railroad attempt — the Moffat Tunnel (opened 1927) was his posthumous completion of the project.
