Clinton Lake & Lawrence: Trails, Wetlands & Prairie

Clinton Lake is the best all-day outdoor circuit within an hour of Kansas City: 7,000 acres of reservoir with 25 miles of trails ranging from lakeside flat walks to limestone bluff climbs above the water. The East Shore Trail follows the ridge above the main bay with views across to the dam; the North Shore has calmer coves for fishing and kayaking. Ladybird Diner in downtown Lawrence has been a Massachusetts Street institution since the 1990s — an American diner that makes its own pie and sources regionally. Baker Wetlands, on the south edge of Lawrence, is 927 acres of restored tallgrass prairie and seasonal wetland habitat connected by elevated boardwalk and gravel trail — the best birding in eastern Kansas during spring and fall migration, and a striking landscape in its own right regardless of season. Free State Brewing, Kansas's first legal brewery since Prohibition, closes the loop.

Seven thousand acres of reservoir with 25 miles of trails, boat ramps, and swimming areas an hour from Kansas City. The East Shore Trail runs along the limestone ridge above the main bay with panoramic views of the water; the North Shore area has sheltered coves better suited for kayaking and fishing. The park is large enough that you rarely feel crowded even on weekends. Rent a kayak from the marina or bring your own gear — the lake is calm enough for beginners and large enough for a full morning on the water.

Ladybird Diner
A Massachusetts Street institution that sources regionally and makes everything from scratch — the pies rotate daily and the turkey melt is a perennial. Classic American diner format with a local-foods ethos; the kind of lunch spot that Lawrence residents take out-of-towners to without thinking twice about it.

Nine hundred and twenty-seven acres of restored tallgrass prairie and seasonal wetland habitat on the south edge of Lawrence, managed by Baker University. Elevated boardwalks cross the marsh zones; gravel and mowed-grass trails cut through the upland prairie. Spring and fall migration seasons bring hundreds of shorebird and waterfowl species through the wetlands — it is the best birding site in eastern Kansas. The discovery center has exhibits on the restoration history and native plant communities; the trails are accessible year-round at no cost.

Free State Brewing Company
Kansas's first legal brewery since Prohibition, anchoring the south end of Massachusetts Street since 1989. The Ad Astra Ale is the flagship; the seasonal rotation is consistently one of the better craft programs in the Midwest. Full kitchen with burgers and pub food — a natural end to a day outdoors before the drive back to Kansas City.
