Regal Path & Drovers Trail
These two connecting trails carry you into the heart of Missouri's largest surviving tallgrass prairie, a rolling ocean of big bluestem, Indian grass, and switchgrass that stands head-high by late summer. The Regal Path is a gentle grassland loop good for a first taste; Drovers pushes farther across the open range where the wild bison most often graze, and hiking here means genuinely sharing the ground with a wild herd. Underfoot the diversity is astonishing — hundreds of wildflower species, from pale purple coneflower to blazing star, bloom in succession through the season. Keep a wide berth from any bison, never approach a calf, and watch the grass for greater prairie-chickens and upland sandpipers.

East Drovers Prairie Overlook & Picnic
A high swell of grassland along the eastern trails opens to a horizon-to-horizon prairie view — nothing but waving grass, sky, and the distant dark shapes of grazing bison in every direction. It is the closest thing in Missouri to standing in the presettlement plains, and a fine place to pause with a packed lunch and simply listen: the wind in the grass, the bubbling song of meadowlarks, and, in spring, the eerie booming of prairie-chickens on their leks. There are no facilities out here, so carry water and pack out everything. Late morning light rakes across the grass and makes the whole prairie shimmer.
